Unfortunately, no. And groups and classes in VoiceThread in general are a little confusing because you’ll see separate lists of “Groups” and “Classes” on your VoiceThread account homepage, but then the two are combined in your sharing options.
Can I see a student’s full name in a VoiceThread comment?
No. The ability to view a student’s full name is only available at the K-12 level. This is frustrating because it can be difficult to tell who has added a comment if students don’t set up an identity that matches their name in Canvas and add a photo that shows their face. For this reason, we recommend that you require that students set up their identity at the start of the semester.
Can I change how my name appears on comments on a VoiceThread presentation?
Yes! VoiceThread shows an icon next to all of your comments that’s based on an “identity” that you’ve created in your account. You can edit your name and add a photo to your identity.
Can I create a “Watch” assignment in VoiceThread for a YouTube video?
Yes! You can embed a YouTube video in a VoiceThread presentation that you use for a Watch assignment. The beauty of adding YouTube videos in VoiceThread is that it removes pop-up ads while the video is playing and doesn’t show random “recommended videos” at its end, plus you can add a message or directions for students as additional slides to go with your YouTube videos.
Will VoiceThread create different courses for each section in a combined section Canvas course?
Unfortunately, no. VoiceThread just creates one course for all of your course’s sections and enrolls students from all of them in it. However, you have a couple of options for a workaround: using a Canvas blueprint instead of combining your sections or manually setting up groups for your different sections in VoiceThread.
How do I allow students to access my course after the term has ended?
This is a situation is one that causes a lot of confusion, especially when students who received an “incomplete” need to access a course to finish their work. Basically, you’ll need to override the default end date that’s set for the term in the backend of Canvas (which most people can’t even see).
How do I require someone to make a copy of my Google Doc?
It’s fairly simple to “hack” the link to a Google Doc (or Sheet, Slide, etc.) so that whoever you share it with will be required to make their own copy. This allows you to use the file as a template, so students (or anyone else) can edit their own version without making changes to your original version.
How do I allow someone else to share their screen during a Zoom meeting?
By default, only a meeting’s host can share their screen, but you can change this setting after your meeting has started by either allowing all participants in your meeting to share their screens or by making the person who needs to present a co-host of the meeting.
Can I limit access to my Zoom meeting to only people with @Miamioh.edu accounts?
Yes! IT Services added this security setting to Zoom on September 29, 2020. Once you’ve enabled it, when you select the “Only authenticated users can join” box in a meeting’s “Meetings Options” settings, you’ll see a drop-down menu with “Sign in as MiamiOH.edu user” listed as an option.
