About Us
The Humanities Student Collective (est. 2024) is a bold and innovative student group pondering the future of the humanities at Miami. Called to action by the sweeping cuts of humanities majors at Miami, we took a course as a fellowship to ponder the source of the cuts and to better understand criticisms of the humanities in local, national, and global contexts. Through our study, we concluded that one of the greatest stressors of the problem was lack of unity. It is only through community that we can face the crisis.
However, where could we find this community? Amongst the clubs of Miami, we found students that loved elements of studying human culture, but we did not find a group with the interdisciplinary focus and political awareness which fit our concerns, so we decided to create a new community: the Humanities Student Collective.
Here, we provide a collective platform for students in humanities and non-humanities departments alike to build connections, to discover the power of human culture, and to advocate for our studies with other allies in the Humanities Center. We make skills afforded by a Humanities education like critical thinking, reading, and writing accessible to all students, create and advertise career development events, advocate for Humanities majors in political and institutional contexts, and provide social opportunities like board game nights.
We would love for you to join us and contribute your voice to the conversation. What is the future of the humanities at Miami University? How can we reach it?
Currently, we meet bi-weekly on Wednesdays at 6:00pm in Upham 262. If you have not yet been added to/received the calendar, follow this link to keep up-to-date with upcoming HSC events. Please join us!
