{"id":950,"date":"2018-04-23T13:43:16","date_gmt":"2018-04-23T17:43:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.miamioh.edu\/edt431-531\/?p=950"},"modified":"2018-04-23T13:43:16","modified_gmt":"2018-04-23T17:43:16","slug":"try-and-keep-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.miamioh.edu\/exemplary-science-teaching\/2018\/04\/try-and-keep-up\/","title":{"rendered":"Try and Keep Up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Science teaching.<\/p>\n<p>What could be so hard about it?\u00a0 Besides the lesson planning, difficult micro-level concepts, keeping the curiosity alive in the classroom, and helping students succeed on standardized tests.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, and let&#8217;s not forget keeping up with the constantly changing, constantly evolving nature of science.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the most challenging aspect of teaching a subject like science is that it is not concrete.\u00a0 I may have learned organic chemistry for the first time in college, but the high schoolers I&#8217;m teaching in field right now just finished their unit on C-H based molecules, something I had never even heard of until sophomore year at Miami.\u00a0 Why are students learning these things so early?\u00a0 Because the nature of chemistry is changing, and what we expect students to know is constantly increasing.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-951\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/edt431-531\/files\/2018\/04\/Human_Genome-265x300.jpg?resize=265%2C300\" alt=\"\" width=\"265\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/exemplary-science-teaching\/files\/2018\/04\/Human_Genome.jpg?resize=265%2C300&amp;ssl=1 265w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/exemplary-science-teaching\/files\/2018\/04\/Human_Genome.jpg?w=309&amp;ssl=1 309w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 265px) 100vw, 265px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is the challenge with science teaching&#8211;not only do you have to be proficient in your subject area, but you have to\u00a0<em>remain<\/em> proficient in your subject area.\u00a0 You have to be constantly learning and growing as much as your students are.\u00a0 You have to keep up with the changing times.<\/p>\n<p>This in and of itself has some implications.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. No more teaching out of the textbook.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-952\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/edt431-531\/files\/2018\/04\/ron-240x300.jpg?resize=240%2C300\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/exemplary-science-teaching\/files\/2018\/04\/ron.jpg?resize=240%2C300&amp;ssl=1 240w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/exemplary-science-teaching\/files\/2018\/04\/ron.jpg?resize=768%2C960&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/exemplary-science-teaching\/files\/2018\/04\/ron.jpg?resize=819%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 819w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/exemplary-science-teaching\/files\/2018\/04\/ron.jpg?w=2000 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That 29 year old photo of Ronald Reagan to show a &#8220;real-life celebrity&#8221; with Alzheimer&#8217;s in your cell bio class?\u00a0 Not gonna cut it.\u00a0 Textbooks can be used, but teaching straight out of a text that is outdated as fast as driving a brand-new car off the lot isn&#8217;t going to help anyone.\u00a0 This means you have to put in work and find the newest research and examples to teach your students.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Students will ask questions you won&#8217;t know the answers to.\u00a0 In fact, students may know things you don&#8217;t.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s right, get off your high horse.\u00a0 You may be the teacher, but students often know more than you think&#8211;especially in science.\u00a0 You have a kid who LOVES the anatomy of the human body (something you don&#8217;t LOVE as much) and they tell you about new advancement in research to help heal human organs?\u00a0 As science teachers, we have to admit we don&#8217;t know everything.\u00a0 We have to learn from our students as much as we teach them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Keeping students engaged is tricky with hard to grasp concepts.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-954\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/edt431-531\/files\/2018\/04\/confused-signage-300x200.jpg?resize=300%2C200\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/exemplary-science-teaching\/files\/2018\/04\/confused-signage.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/exemplary-science-teaching\/files\/2018\/04\/confused-signage.jpg?resize=768%2C513&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/exemplary-science-teaching\/files\/2018\/04\/confused-signage.jpg?w=804&amp;ssl=1 804w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Students have learned their whole lives to believe what they see, and all of the sudden you&#8217;re telling them that the water on their desk is actually made up of molecules that share these &#8220;polar bonds&#8221;?\u00a0 Many kids will have a hard time keeping up with these micro-level concepts, and this will take some work on your hands to make sure you&#8217;re making material as engaging and understandable as possible.<\/p>\n<p>All in all, being a science teacher is tough, but we picked this career for a reason.\u00a0 The rewards are well worth it if you&#8217;re willing to put the time in and teach the way students deserve.<\/p>\n<p>Can you keep up?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>Science teaching.
