That blog title may have one too many puns, but you get the message. Let me divulge to you some of my personal struggles in my current journey to becoming a science teacher, and share some advice from teachers who may be going through similar things.<\/p>\n<p><em>How can we turn this flower&#8217;s frown upside down?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<em>As a science teacher, I would initially say water, sunlight, and carbon dioxide; but let&#8217;s stick to the metaphorical pain that this plant is dealing with.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Here&#8217;s a peak at what we DON&#8217;T want to happen when faced with challenges:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">U kno what&#39;s stressful? When ur science teacher tells u follow the directions exactly or ull get a 0 and then doesn&#39;t give u the directions.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; ADDI ADDIGATOR (@TheAddigator) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheAddigator\/status\/536589642217574400?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 23, 2014<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/Gatokal\/status\/981986180253265925<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/Psy_Doktor\/status\/964380112031334400<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-886 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/edt431-531\/files\/2018\/04\/sad.jpeg?resize=120%2C150\" alt=\"\" width=\"120\" height=\"150\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Some current challenges&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>-Our courses are very science-based so that we can ensure we are getting more exposure with the content knowledge, but am I missing out on more of the educational courses that would increase my <strong>teaching skills<\/strong>?<\/p>\n<p>-What if my students don&#8217;t<strong> like<\/strong> me?<\/p>\n<p>-How can I ensure my students are getting the most out of a lab\/activity and actually <strong>learning<\/strong>, not just copying or following directions blindly?<\/p>\n<p>-What if one of my students gets <strong>injured<\/strong> during one of my lab experiments?<\/p>\n<p>-How can I make science <strong>culturally relevant<\/strong> to help my students feel included?<\/p>\n<p>-How can I<strong> engage<\/strong>\u00a0my students who do not have science at the top of their list of favorite subjects?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Some responses&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right\">-Get to know your students on a <strong>meaningful<\/strong> level: Identify students interests, values, home life, traditions, communication style, etc.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right\">-Science is EVERYWHERE. An essential element to turning students on to science is to show them how it\u2019s used in their daily lives. Let your classroom <strong>explore<\/strong> and<strong> understand<\/strong> how this subject matter touches more in their day-to-day activities than they think.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right\">&#8211;<strong>Safety<\/strong> in the science laboratory requires common sense, preparation, and knowledge by teachers and students.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right\">-We should not focus on if our students\u00a0<strong>like\u00a0<\/strong>us.
