{"id":873,"date":"2018-04-10T19:29:05","date_gmt":"2018-04-10T23:29:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.miamioh.edu\/edt431-531\/?p=873"},"modified":"2018-04-13T09:23:33","modified_gmt":"2018-04-13T13:23:33","slug":"classroom-managed-crisis-averted","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.miamioh.edu\/exemplary-science-teaching\/2018\/04\/classroom-managed-crisis-averted\/","title":{"rendered":"Classroom: Managed, Crisis: Averted"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Walking in your first day and managing a classroom sounds crazy.\u00a0 All of us haven&#8217;t truly managed a classroom on our own yet, we&#8217;re still figuring out how we are going to control a classroom with all the hustle and bustle.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s some tips that might be useful:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Classroom\/Lab Safety Figured Out Right Away<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Lab safety is incredibly important in the science classroom.\u00a0 Whether you are in a chemistry classroom working with possibly dangerous chemicals or a biology classroom with animal handling; there is always a reason to get lab safety taken care of.\u00a0 The sooner your students know the rules about doing labs\/activities, the more likely horseplay will be under control.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/res.cloudinary.com\/teepublic\/image\/private\/s--oPlv9vBd--\/t_Resized%20Artwork\/c_fit,g_north_west,h_1054,w_1054\/co_ffffff,e_outline:53\/co_ffffff,e_outline:inner_fill:53\/co_bbbbbb,e_outline:3:1000\/c_mpad,g_center,h_1260,w_1260\/b_rgb:eeeeee\/c_limit,f_auto,h_285,q_90,w_285\/v1491248378\/production\/designs\/1381704_1\" width=\"285\" height=\"285\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Have the Rules Figured Out When the Students Walk In<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Pretty self explanatory, make sure the students know the rules day one and then stick to them for the remainder of the year.\u00a0 Keeping a chart of some kind up to make sure they know the rules to follow if they ever need a reminder!<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-882\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/edt431-531\/files\/2018\/04\/chrome_2018-04-12_08-56-13-230x300.png?resize=314%2C410\" alt=\"\" width=\"314\" height=\"410\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/exemplary-science-teaching\/files\/2018\/04\/chrome_2018-04-12_08-56-13.png?resize=230%2C300&amp;ssl=1 230w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/exemplary-science-teaching\/files\/2018\/04\/chrome_2018-04-12_08-56-13.png?w=496&amp;ssl=1 496w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 314px) 100vw, 314px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pinterest.com\/pin\/84653667973284146\/\">https:\/\/www.pinterest.com\/pin\/84653667973284146\/<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Setup A Procedure for Students<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Get students into a routine when you begin class.\u00a0 It doesn&#8217;t have to be anything convoluted, something as simple as sitting in their seats and then asking them about how their days or weekends went.\u00a0 This gets them to get their talking out of their systems and you begin to feel more approachable to them.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Build Trust<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Students want to know that you are there for them.\u00a0 Making yourself out to be someone who doesn&#8217;t care means they won&#8217;t care about you or your class.\u00a0 Give your students a reason to see you as a person, not just their teacher (don&#8217;t make them think they can push you over though)!<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-877\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/edt431-531\/files\/2018\/04\/webinar10012014ssk163314482-300x202.jpg?resize=339%2C228\" alt=\"\" width=\"339\" height=\"228\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/exemplary-science-teaching\/files\/2018\/04\/webinar10012014ssk163314482.jpg?resize=300%2C202&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/exemplary-science-teaching\/files\/2018\/04\/webinar10012014ssk163314482.jpg?w=570&amp;ssl=1 570w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 339px) 100vw, 339px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Get Them Situated<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This one seems odd, but it essentially means give the students a space where they feel comfortable.\u00a0 If they feel comfortable in your classroom and can trust and respect you (see above), then they&#8217;ll listen to you and most of the time, they will behave and want to be in class.\u00a0 Give them a reason to come into your class, and that doesn&#8217;t mean just to learn!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Keep them Engaged!<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Don&#8217;t let your students lose interest in you.\u00a0 Keep a strong presence and if you see\/feel the students are clearly becoming distracted or unable to pay attention, it&#8217;s time to change what you are doing.\u00a0 If you&#8217;ve been lecturing for more than 15 minutes, get your students doing an activity, they can&#8217;t keep their attention on a lecture for that long!\u00a0 If students are actively doing something and are interested in what they are doing, then they will manage themselves.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">John Ra (genre) is engaging students today with her twang, personality and creativity <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/tuesdayswithtezel?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#tuesdayswithtezel<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/gfwinship?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#gfwinship<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/eKjGYP54Q2\">pic.twitter.com\/eKjGYP54Q2<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash;
