Unfortunately, this is not the case for far too many teachers in the country.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why do teachers need excess supplies?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A study depicted that &#8220;38 percent of teachers reported that they abandoned more than two projects over the course of the school year because of lack of funds.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When teachers are able to provide their students\u2014particularly those from low-income backgrounds\u2014with adequate supplies, their learning experience is transformed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A teacher reports,\u00a0&#8220;When I am able to give them opportunities through different supplies, they see that they are not limited,&#8221; they said. &#8220;They see that they can do more and be more. It gives them a lot of self-assurance.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Are there alternatives to purchasing supplies for every lesson?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>YES. Depending on the lesson or activity, there can be alternatives that allow the teacher to spend NO money, or very little of their own money. I have a few suggestions of low-budget activities that showcase how lessons can be altered by teachers and adjusted to have less money come out of their pockets.\u00a0Here are a few examples:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><em>Low-budget STEM Activities<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>#1: &#8220;Magic Milk&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Rainbow Milk - Fun Do At Home or In The Classroom Science Experiment\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/647x2o67EzQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Intro: An introductory activity to showcase the concept of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">surface tension<\/span> by having\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 students observe the thought-provoking mechanism that causes the colors to\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 disperse.<\/p>\n<p>Supplies: Packs of disposable paper bowls ($3)<\/p>\n<p>1 gallon of milk ($2)<\/p>\n<p>Box of food coloring ($2)<\/p>\n<p>Dish liquid (not antibacterial) ($1)<\/p>\n<p>Bag of q-tips ($1)<\/p>\n<p>Total cost: $10<\/p>\n<p><strong>#2: &#8220;Rainbow Tower&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Amazing  7 Layer Liquid Stacking! (How To) Denser Than You Think\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qKHUNvMsF6U?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Intro: An engaging activity that clearly showcases the aspects of varying <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">densities<\/span> but\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 allows students to observe and make predictions (weight, thickness, etc.) as to\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 why the liquids &#8220;stack&#8221; instead of mix.<\/p>\n<p>Supplies: 1 tall glass vase or recycled empty water bottle ($0-$3)<\/p>\n<p>1 box of food coloring ($1)<\/p>\n<p>Liquids at home with varying densities (water, soap, oil, syrup)\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0($0-$5)<\/p>\n<p>Objects at home that sink to densities (soda cap, blueberry, penny) ($0)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Total cost: $1-$9<\/p>\n<p><strong>#3: &#8220;Water Lens Trick&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Just Add Water: The Surprisingly Simple Magic Trick\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/g7Wa3EKEkm8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Intro: A simple, cost-efficient, and time saving demonstration that introduces the idea\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">light refraction<\/span> through glass vs. water with an image or symbol of the teachers&#8217;\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0choosing.<\/p>\n<p>Supplies: 1 Piece of paper ($0)<\/p>\n<p>1 pen\/marker ($0)<\/p>\n<p>Large glass of water ($0)<\/p>\n<p>Total cost: FREE<\/p>\n<p><strong>#4: &#8220;Vacuum&#8221; Brain Teaser<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-828\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/edt431-531\/files\/2018\/04\/teaser.jpeg?resize=162%2C157\" alt=\"\" width=\"162\" height=\"157\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 The question:\u00a0A man in a restaurant asked a waiter for a juice glass, a dinner plate, water, a match, and a lemon wedge. The man poured enough water onto the plate to cover it.<br \/>\n&#8220;If you can get the water on the plate into this glass without touching or moving this plate, I will give you $100,&#8221; the man said. &#8220;You can use the match and lemon to do this.&#8221;<br \/>\nA few minutes later, the waiter walked away with $100 in his pocket. How did the waiter get the water into the glass?<\/p>\n<p>The Hint: The glass will be upside down when the water is in it<\/p>\n<p>The Answer:\u00a0First, the waiter stuck the match into the lemon wedge, so that it would stand straight. Then he lit the match, and put it in the middle of the plate with the lemon. Then, he placed the glass upside-down over the match. As the flame used up the oxygen in the glass, it created a small vacuum, which sucked in the water through the space between the glass and the plate.
