In order to get students to participate, I will sometimes offer candy or something little to motivate them. But is this really motivating them to learn or think critically about what they&#8217;re learning? <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/exemplary-science-teaching\/files\/2022\/12\/blog9-1024x1024.jpg?resize=352%2C352&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4807\" width=\"352\" height=\"352\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/exemplary-science-teaching\/files\/2022\/12\/blog9.jpg?resize=1024%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/exemplary-science-teaching\/files\/2022\/12\/blog9.jpg?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/exemplary-science-teaching\/files\/2022\/12\/blog9.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/exemplary-science-teaching\/files\/2022\/12\/blog9.jpg?resize=768%2C768&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/exemplary-science-teaching\/files\/2022\/12\/blog9.jpg?w=1250&amp;ssl=1 1250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 352px) 100vw, 352px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Benefits of intrinsic motivation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>encourages autonomy:<\/strong> when students feel self-motivated to do something, it feels less like an assignment and more like an activity they want to do <\/li><li><strong>increases creativity<\/strong>: since the activity is something a student wants to do, they are given the freedom to be more creative with the task <\/li><li><strong>improves understanding<\/strong>: when creativity and autonomy intersect, it makes it more likely that the student will comprehend and retain what they are learning<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is extrinsic motivation ever useful?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, extrinsic motivation can be useful in some situations. An if-then reward can work for lower-level tasks, like when I offer candy to the students I tutor when they answer a question.
