But what do these words mean?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Diversity: <\/strong>the practice or quality of including or involving people from a range of different social and ethnic backgrounds and of different genders, sexual orientations, etc.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Equity: <\/strong>the quality of being fair and impartial.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Inclusion:<\/strong> the practice or policy of providing equal access to opportunities and resources for people who might otherwise be excluded or marginalized, such as those who have physical or mental disabilities and members of other minority groups.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>So, why is diversity, equity, and inclusion important in STEM fields and in STEM education? It\u2019s no secret that STEM fields are white and male dominated. Showing the countless careers available in STEM and the best ways to reach them! We need to go further than that. We need to consider the deeper reasons minorities are not flocking to STEM\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/XBR1DsqsefU_ljnSPRY3WeUIexxZeh8WkOjoZf281BtlGN1Sv79lxLeZNQiwHPJzqWQp0I69EjqtBRnoHyoDJNt3D_6T_L7aGaxn8b6G_7vAN4fUgrLAhV-O4emFZt4SAaoAKy2cBj_hQAWxgMeuRHDEiOOpmpuhqyPJvdvOJL0ruU2VX__YTDY8RNl9mA\" width=\"624\" height=\"279\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are so many barriers keeping minorities out of STEM fields.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>wage gaps<\/li><li>harassment<\/li><li>discrimination<\/li><li>barriers to education and opportunity <\/li><li>a lack of role models or representation in the media&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A love for science isn\u2019t enough, the culture of STEM careers needs to change. All of our students should feel welcome in our classrooms. We need to show all of our students that STEM is for them, and also for each and every one of their classmates too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A great way to do this is to teach about minority scientists, engineers, mathematicians, and technicians!
