Many communities such as Women&#8217;s and BIPOC communities are underrepresented in STEM and therefore <strong>don&#8217;t feel like they have a place in any STEM field<\/strong>. The graph below shows the percentage of different races in STEM careers with and without a bachelor&#8217;s degree. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ncses.nsf.gov\/pubs\/nsb20212\/assets\/participation-of-demographic-groups-in-stem\/figures\/nsb20212-figlbr-024.svg?0.5935190155142209\" alt=\"STEM workforce, by degree level and race or ethnicity: 2010 and 2019.\" width=\"644\" height=\"496\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>percentages were much higher<\/strong> for many of the races represented in the graph showing <strong>STEM careers without a bachelor&#8217;s degree.<\/strong> This isn&#8217;t surprising as the percentage of <strong>Latinx STEM graduates increased from 5.9 to 10.4%<\/strong> while <strong>Black STEM graduates decreased from 4.7 to 3.86% in 2019.  <\/strong>(https:\/\/stemeducationjournal.springeropen.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s40594-020-00241-4) <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote has-black-color has-text-color has-background\" style=\"background-color:#046644\"><blockquote><p><strong>&#8220;Students of color in STEM majors&nbsp;are less likely to continue&nbsp;if they feel excluded, isolated or have&nbsp;discouraging academic experiences&#8221;<\/strong><\/p><cite>\u201cIf you aren\u2019t White, Asian or Indian, you aren\u2019t an engineer\u201d: racial microaggressions in STEM education<br><a href=\"https:\/\/stemeducationjournal.springeropen.com\/counter\/pdf\/10.1186\/s40594-020-00241-4.pdf\"><\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Diversity in STEM\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7-naKAOXaSs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-light-gray-color has-text-color has-background has-medium-font-size\" style=\"background-color:#046644\">Gender &#8211; Gap <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The \u2018gender-equality paradox\u2019 in STEM fields \u2013 BBC Newsnight\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tn3yqmiwKAk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>White Men are the majority of Graduates in STEM degrees worldwide. This gap in gender representation is often shown in even science programs and television shows for children. When we show children that white men can be scientists it shapes the idea of who the field is created for. This is why shows such as <em>Emily&#8217;s Wonder Lab <\/em>and <em>Xploration Station<\/em> are so beneficial.
