If you look at young elementary school students you will see almost no difference between the number of white male students interested in science and minority students interested in science. As teachers that begins in our classrooms.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">This article from the Education Advisory Board discusses research done on why minority students are leaving the stem fields. It is a great place to begin or continue your journey into making the stem community a safer place.\n\nCheck it out here:\n<a href=\"https:\/\/eab.com\/insights\/daily-briefing\/student-success\/a-third-of-minority-students-leave-stem-majors-heres-why\/\">https:\/\/eab.com\/insights\/daily-briefing\/student-success\/a-third-of-minority-students-leave-stem-majors-heres-why\/<\/a><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Creating a Safe and Welcoming Culture Surrounding STEM<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#d7c2ff\"><strong>Creating a safe and welcoming culture in the STEM fields needs to begin somewhere, so where do we start?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cAdministrators need to talk to students, figure out what\u2019s going on in classrooms and how they add to the exclusion these students feel. We have to hone in on the reasons they\u2019re leaving and directly address these issues before solving anything else.\u201d<\/p><cite>Darryl Dickerson, Associate Director of the Minority Engineering Program at&nbsp;Purdue University<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#d4bffb\"><strong>Once we know this issues what can we do?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Physics Education Research Group at the University of Utah (PERU) has done research on creating an inclusive climate in physics specifically for LGBTQ scientists. Despite this research being on LGBTQ scientists, their suggestions can be applied to lots of different situations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Here are some of the steps I will personally take to make my future classroom a safe and welcoming space to those of all identities:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Include background on scientists that go beyond the idea of a white male with crazy hair<\/li><li>Make sure all resources and lessons are accessible to students of all abilities<\/li><li>Introduce students to diverse scientists in their community, including those who are trying to change the culture of the STEM community<\/li><li>Respect and protect students identities<\/li><li>Create equal and equitable opportunities for students to thrive<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">Check out this youtube channel that introduces students to a diverse range of scientists in Cincinnati!\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCRxGUfqNO_4m_uBxNFo23Jw?view_as=subscriber\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCRxGUfqNO_4m_uBxNFo23Jw?view_as=subscriber<\/a><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#dbb4f9\">And most importantly continue to fight to change the environment that minority students are entering into such that fewer are pushed to leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">TL\/DR<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/edt431-531\/files\/2021\/11\/image.jpeg?resize=284%2C284&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4063\" width=\"284\" height=\"284\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/exemplary-science-teaching\/files\/2021\/11\/image.jpeg?w=225&amp;ssl=1 225w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/exemplary-science-teaching\/files\/2021\/11\/image.jpeg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 284px) 100vw, 284px\" \/><figcaption>Alt.
