The goal never seems to be about learning, but about &#8220;getting out.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students therefore become <strong>extrinsically motivated.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-background wp-block-heading\" style=\"background-color:#ff797b\">What is extrinsic motivation?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.verywellmind.com\/thmb\/aS_0isRivb73hz6B8oQ-fG23Dao%3D\/1500x1000\/filters%3Ano_upscale%28%29%3Amax_bytes%28150000%29%3Astrip_icc%28%29\/2795164-what-is-extrinsic-motivation-5b31542404d1cf0036a91c79.png?ssl=1\" alt=\"What Is Extrinsic Motivation and How Does It Work?\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cThe problem with making an extrinsic reward the only destination that matters is that some people will choose the quickest route there, even if it means taking the low road. Indeed, most of the scandals and misbehavior that have seemed endemic to modern life involve shortcuts.\u201d<\/p><cite><em>\u2015\u00a0Daniel Pink,<\/em><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><em>Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us<\/em><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Extrinsically motivated students are more compelled to take short cuts, to look up answers, to find ways to cheat. Pink,<\/em><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><em>Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us<\/em><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Intrinsic motivation leads to:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Persistence:&nbsp;<\/strong>Because tasks are being completed for personal sense of accomplishment, students are more likely to persist through than if they were extrinsically motivated. <\/li><li><strong>Engagement:&nbsp;<\/strong>Students are more engaged in what they are learning because there is a personal connection.<\/li><li><strong>Learning efficacy:&nbsp;<\/strong>When students are intrinsically motivated they&#8217;re learning potential increases.<\/li><li><strong>Better performance:&nbsp;<\/strong>When you students are trying harder, pushing further, and are more engaged students will perform better in class.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Want to learn more?
