The challenges of\nacquiring the materials needed for the classroom are known all too well by\nteachers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cPaying for school supplies has become the norm for teachers in the US. Around 94% of public-school teachers report spending their own money on supplies, a 2018 Department of Education survey found. Teachers reported spending $479 of their own money on average each year, according to the DOE survey\u201d (Akhtar, 2019). <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>So, what are some ways we can access our student\u2019s prior\nknowledge, create interest in a topic, and get students excited about learning\nwith limited financial support? In short, how do we <strong>ENGAGE<\/strong> our students\non a <strong>BUDGET<\/strong>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. Games, brainbusters, puzzles, riddles, and more!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/edt431-531\/files\/2021\/02\/Blog-1-scrambled-science-game.png?resize=227%2C198&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3445\" width=\"227\" height=\"198\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/exemplary-science-teaching\/files\/2021\/02\/Blog-1-scrambled-science-game.png?w=520&amp;ssl=1 520w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/exemplary-science-teaching\/files\/2021\/02\/Blog-1-scrambled-science-game.png?resize=300%2C262&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 227px) 100vw, 227px\" \/><figcaption><a href=\"https:\/\/kids.niehs.nih.gov\/games\/\">https:\/\/kids.niehs.nih.gov\/games\/<\/a> <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Engage your student with games, braintbusters, puzzles, riddles, and more to encourage critical-thinking, problem-solving, and observation skills while also learning new science content and vocabulary. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, the National Institute of Environmental Health Science (NIEHS) Science Games website has a variety of health and the environment educational games for students of all ages \u2013 check it out here: <br><a href=\"https:\/\/kids.niehs.nih.gov\/games\/\">https:\/\/kids.niehs.nih.gov\/games\/\ufeff<\/a> <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Virtual Field Trips and Home Safaris<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Take virtual trips to national parks, museums, aquariums,\nfarms, outer space, historical sites, and much more! These virtual experiences will\nget students excited and curious without having to leave the classroom. Check\nout a list of possible virtual field trips here: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weareteachers.com\/best-virtual-field-trips\/\">https:\/\/www.weareteachers.com\/best-virtual-field-trips\/<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Real-world applications:<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1) Take your students to Yellowstone National Park,\nvirtually! Using the virtual tour, \u201cwalk\u201d to Canary Spring at Mammoth Hot\nSprings. Use this virtual trip to give your students a real-world example of how\ninteractions between mantle convection, Earth\u2019s layers, and water can produce\nhot springs. The Cincinnati Zoo Home Safaris are a great way to engage students in learning about different types of animals and biomes. According to the website, \u201cPhET sims are based on extensive education research and engage students through an intuitive, game-like environment where students learn through exploration and discovery.\u201d You can find over 150 simulations available here: <a href=\"https:\/\/phet.colorado.edu\/\">https:\/\/phet.colorado.edu\/<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>5. YouTube video clips<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>YouTube is one of the most readily available and easiest resources to use for finding videos on the topic of interest to engage your students.
