I encourage you to watch this short introduction as to why we need to encourage all of our students \u2013 specifically women and minorities \u2013 to pursue STEM. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is Equity?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Equality and equity are not the same thing. To understand the goal of this post \u2013 equity in STEM encouragement \u2013 we must first understand the terms. Equity means there is access to the same resources \u2013 fairness. Equality means everyone has the same thing \u2013 sameness. This decline\nis saddening, and as educators, we need to try to change this. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How do we equitably encourage STEM?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>first way<\/strong> that I propose that we encourage STEM is through <strong>mentorship programs<\/strong>. Blow you will find a video that Princeton University put out concerning the power of mentors in helping students succeed in STEM. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Power of Mentors: Blazing Paths for Underrepresented Minorities in #STEM\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/t7hMF4ItJ_8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption>  I encourage you to watch this video and take note on just how important mentorship is to people. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In the classroom:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a future educator, I want to develop a mentorship program\nfor my students. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Connecting younger students with other students who\nhave been successful in my classes previously.<\/li><li>Connecting to the greater community and calling\nupon different people within the field of Chemistry, for instance, that can connect\nwith my students. <\/li><li>Every month or every other week, there could be\na \u201cConnection Friday\u201d<ul><li>This day students and their mentors can come together.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>They can choose to get help on homework, ask\neach other questions, or just talk about life. <\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Giving students the connections to people to help them and serve as a guide is invaluable for encouragement to stay within STEM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">In my future classroom, I will strive to create a meaningful mentorship program so that ALL of my students will have equitable access to resources for their STEM success! <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/EDT431?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#EDT431<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/scienceteaching?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#scienceteaching<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/makemeaningfulconnections?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#makemeaningfulconnections<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Colleen Jaycox (@Miss_Jaycox) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Miss_Jaycox\/status\/1324045340643713024?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 4, 2020<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>second way<\/strong> that I propose that we equitably encourage STEM is through introducing new <strong>extracurricular programing<\/strong> specifically designed for different populations and STEM involvement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eastern Michigan University created, Digital Divas. In this example I will be talking\nabout a Women in Science Group.
