What do they look like? And, more importantly, why did you\nthink of that particular kind of scientist? These studies show that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/edt431-531\/files\/2020\/10\/blog-5-graph-1.png?resize=252%2C260&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3312\" width=\"252\" height=\"260\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/exemplary-science-teaching\/files\/2020\/10\/blog-5-graph-1.png?w=451&amp;ssl=1 451w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/exemplary-science-teaching\/files\/2020\/10\/blog-5-graph-1.png?resize=291%2C300&amp;ssl=1 291w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 252px) 100vw, 252px\" \/><figcaption>Source: Miller, Nolla, Eagly, &amp; Uttal, 2018 in Terada, 2019<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Initially, less than 1% of children drew female scientists, but this percentage increased to 28% on average in more recent studies (Terada, 2019).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li> Girls are more likely than boys to draw female scientists. In 2016, 58% of girls drew female scientists whereas boys drew male scientists 90% of the time (Terada, 2019). <br><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li> As students get older, however, perceptions of scientists change and more students tend to draw male scientists (Terada, 2019).   <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the efforts to promote equity in STEM in recent\nyears, student\u2019s perceptions of scientists have not significantly changed over the\npast several decades (Terada, 2019). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, what is the status of women and minorities in STEM, how\ncan we encourage them to pursue STEM, and what should STEM awareness look like\nin the science classroom? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-background has-black-color has-light-gray-background-color\"><strong>Status of Women and Minorities in STEM<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the science and engineering workforce has become\nmore diverse, women and minority groups continue to be significantly\nunderrepresented in these fields (AAUW, n.d., NGCP, 2020). Compared\nwith their shares in the overall workforce whites and Asians are\noverrepresented; blacks and Hispanics are underrepresented in the STEM workforce\nas a whole\u201d (Funk &amp; Parker, 2018). <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background has-light-gray-background-color\"><strong>Ways to Encourage People to Pursue STEM<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 1990, the US has experienced a rapid transition to an information-based economy and, as a result, STEM employment has grown by a staggering 79% &#8211; outpacing all other occupations (Funk &amp; Parker, 2018). Continued growth of the STEM-based economy requires a diverse workforce, which not only positively affects problem-solving and innovation, but also increases company revenues (Master\u2019s in Data Science, 2020). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter aligncenter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">&quot;The world needs all types of minds&quot; &#8211; Temple Grandin <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/EDT431?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#EDT431<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/scienceteaching?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#scienceteaching<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/equityinSTEM?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#equityinSTEM<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Lauren Colliver Barnes (@realmrs_barnes) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realmrs_barnes\/status\/1322264061183221762?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 30, 2020<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Women and minorities can be encouraged to pursue STEM occupations by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Dispelling commonly held beliefs and stereotypes held by children and young adults about who can pursue STEM (AAUW, n.d.,Terada, 2019).<\/li><li>Providing mentorship, professional development, and career advancement for individuals both in the academic setting and in the workplace (AAUW, n.d.).<\/li><li>Promoting more women and minorities to leadership roles and higher levels of management (AAUW, n.d.).<\/li><li>Creating more flexible and inclusionary (and less male-centric) academic and workplace cultures that provide support for women and minorities (AAUW, n.d.).<\/li><li>Closing the salary gap (<strong>$15,900 in 2013!!<\/strong>) between male and female professionals in STEM-related jobs (Ouimet, n.d.)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In this TEDx talk, Elaine Montilla explains the value of mentoring women and minorities in Tech <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Value of Mentoring Women and Minorities in Tech | Elaine Montilla | TEDxChelseaPark\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qmKE-Oc-Qu0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background has-light-gray-background-color\"><strong>Promoting STEM Awareness and Equity in the Science Classroom<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Teachers play an important role in encouraging students to\npursue coursework and future career opportunities in STEM. To do so, teachers\nneed to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Focus on learning the process of science.
