Every student had different strengths and weaknesses. This is why working together is important. What you call people that are working together can make a difference in how they view themselves as a unit. Students called a &#8220;group&#8221; tend to work separately to\u00a0fulfill a common goal. Whereas, students called a &#8220;team&#8221; work together as one unit to complete a common goal. This can be done with students at the same or different learning level.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.dailyteachingtools.com\/images\/StudentsJigsaw.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Why is cooperative learning important?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cooperative learning is important to implement into the classroom because it helps students learn from one another. They are able to use their peers knowledge to advance their own. Plus, students are able to teach others. This is a great learning tool because the best way to learn is to teach others. Cooperative learning also helps students stay engaged in their topic.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/image.slidesharecdn.com\/cooperativelg-140726033138-phpapp01\/95\/cooperative-learninglearning-a-joint-effort-5-638.jpg?ssl=1\" \/><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Cooperative Learning\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HEh8Z0sbiRE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Types of cooperative learning:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>STAD\n<ol>\n<li>The teacher lectures on a topic<\/li>\n<li>The students get into teams<\/li>\n<li>The teams work together to learn and understand the material<\/li>\n<li>They make a presentation on the topic<\/li>\n<li>The students are given an individual quiz so that the teacher can see if they have mastered the topic<\/li>\n<li>The students and the teams are given an individual improvement score to track their progress<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Jigsaw II\n<ol>\n<li>The students get into teams<\/li>\n<li>They have a topic that is specific to their team<\/li>\n<li>Each student within a team is given a sub-topic to work on<\/li>\n<li>A student researches their sub-topic<\/li>\n<li>Each student presents what they have learned to the other team members<\/li>\n<li>The team discusses their findings<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Co-op Co-op\n<ol>\n<li>The teacher introduces a topic to the students<\/li>\n<li>The class discusses this topic<\/li>\n<li>The students find their own interest within the topic<\/li>\n<li>The students get into teams based on their interests<\/li>\n<li>The team breaks down further to research a sub-topic<\/li>\n<li>The smaller team tells the team about their findings<\/li>\n<li>The team gives a presentation on their topic to the whole class<\/li>\n<li>The students are evaluated on their work and they evaluate their peers<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Group Investigation\n<ol>\n<li>Teams are made based on the students learning abilities<\/li>\n<li>The class create goals for themselves and a plan for how they will go about their learning<\/li>\n<li>They proceed through the plan with different activities to help them learm<\/li>\n<li>The students analyze what they have learned and summarize the information<\/li>\n<li>They present the information to the class<\/li>\n<li>The students are evaluated individually and as a group<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Guided Reciprocal Peer Questioning\n<ol>\n<li>The teacher gives a lecture on the topic<\/li>\n<li>The students get guided questions to get them thinking about the topic<\/li>\n<li>The students finish making their questions based on the guide<\/li>\n<li>They do not need to know the answers to the questions<\/li>\n<li>The students will brake up into teams to discuss the questions and possibly find answers<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/i.pinimg.com\/564x\/4c\/15\/ea\/4c15ea7874c68b4adedd49bb0d986ec4.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"Great chart of engagement strategies by The Groovy Teacher!\" \/><\/p>\n<p>(image from Pinterest)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Overall, I think cooperative learning is a good way for students to stay engaged in the learning. They are able to work together to find an answer. They form bonds with their peers. They are also able to teach one another.
