It can mean that you provide an inviting place for students to experience science. It can mean you model curiosity and inquiry. It can mean you &#8220;seize the teachable moment&#8221;. It can mean you strive to keep your students excited about the endless possibilities. Or, it can mean all these things and much more!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In my opinion, one way to become an exemplary science teacher is to make your class memorable. <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Twenty years from now, your students will likely struggle to recall what the chemical symbol for Plutonium is if they only ever learned from traditional textbook and worksheet style instruction. In fact, they may not even be able to remember it for the test next week!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/edt431-531\/files\/2020\/09\/forget.jpg?resize=655%2C436&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2922\" width=\"655\" height=\"436\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/exemplary-science-teaching\/files\/2020\/09\/forget.jpg?w=509&amp;ssl=1 509w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/exemplary-science-teaching\/files\/2020\/09\/forget.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 655px) 100vw, 655px\" \/><figcaption>Textbooks and worksheets are &#8220;curiosity crushing&#8221; means of instruction&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of having your students attempt to learn the art and nature of science via reading a likely outdated textbook, dive into learning science <em>with<\/em> your students by providing a place where they can ask questions, become energized, and want to pursue the endeavor of learning science. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/edt431-531\/files\/2020\/02\/20171216_BLP513.jpg?resize=579%2C325\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2734\" width=\"579\" height=\"325\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/exemplary-science-teaching\/files\/2020\/02\/20171216_BLP513.jpg?w=595&amp;ssl=1 595w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/exemplary-science-teaching\/files\/2020\/02\/20171216_BLP513.jpg?resize=300%2C169&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 579px) 100vw, 579px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Here are some ways to inspire!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>If possible, take students outside of the classroom to explore an aspect of science in an outdoor setting<\/li><li>Give students ample opportunities to collaborate with their classmates and really think&#8230;<\/li><li>Provide a safe place where questions are encouraged<\/li><li>Promote playful contemplation among all students in a class<\/li><li>Allow wonder and curiosity to drive&#8211;not a set-in-stone curriculum<\/li><li><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.vernier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/action.gdx-tmp._k-8._middle-school._baking-soda._vinegar._cool-reaction._ad.001.jpg?resize=547%2C378&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Four Ways to Get Elementary Students Excited About Science - Vernier\" width=\"547\" height=\"378\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>A Lesson Plan for Thought:<\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>At the beginning of a unit, give students an open-ended question that would be difficult to answer with a google search. An example of such a question could be: What makes the sun burn continuously? What are the implications for us on Earth if we are able to replicate this process? How would we do that?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Place students into groups where they will meet periodically throughout the unit to freely discuss the prompt and engage with the material. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout the unit, provide engaging hands on activities, models, and information that would ensure students are on the right path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, have students create a visual project based on the prompt such as an animated video, a piece of art, or an engaging infographic. Another Lesson Plan:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Water Quality and Implications&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If permitted, find different water sources with your students and have them collect vials of water from a variety of sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Discuss in detail what students predict to be in the water and how they might test their hypothesis? Collaborate with the whole class to design a laboratory procedure to discover the contents of the vial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the water is tested, guide the students to uncover the reason for different chemical substances being in our water systems. Are they good\/bad\/neutral?
