These are examples of extrinsic motivation. We have all been extrinsically motivated many, many times throughout our lives. School being one of the biggest examples. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In our society, we stress the importance of grades, GPAs, and test scores. As sad as this is, students feel pressured to do well in school in order to be successful in the future. Our job as future educators is to steer the students&#8217; mindsets away from extrinsic rewards and into intrinsic ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But first, what exactly is the difference between <strong>extrinsic<\/strong> and <strong>intrinsic<\/strong> motivation?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/edt431-531\/files\/2019\/09\/intinsic-vs-extrinsic-graphic.jpg?resize=616%2C440&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2498\" width=\"616\" height=\"440\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/exemplary-science-teaching\/files\/2019\/09\/intinsic-vs-extrinsic-graphic.jpg?w=548&amp;ssl=1 548w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/exemplary-science-teaching\/files\/2019\/09\/intinsic-vs-extrinsic-graphic.jpg?resize=300%2C214&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 616px) 100vw, 616px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Beth Hennessey, in the video below, discusses her research on how to set up classrooms in order to enhance motivation and creativity. They are promising students rewards, setting up expectations of evaluation, limiting choices and time, and breathing down the students&#8217; necks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">So what should teachers be doing instead?!?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Give students a choice<\/strong> <ul><li>Allowing students to decide how they want to learn, or what they want to learn will keep them excited and engaged in the classroom. Games present fun alternatives to otherwise mundane lessons.
