Motivation. Ambition. These words all have one thing in common, they are what get us to get going and doing what we need or want to do.\u00a0 Now it&#8217;s not all cut and dry, I know most people (myself included) dread getting out of bed every day, but we do it anyways. Why? Because we are motivated by something.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone \" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.upal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/shutterstock_39210619.jpg?resize=345%2C229\" width=\"345\" height=\"229\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0<em>Drive<\/em>, by Daniel Pink, we get a glimpse into all of the &#8220;secrets&#8221; and truths behind motivation.\u00a0 He explains to us the types of motivation, the elements of them and what makes motivation important for a person.\u00a0 It isn&#8217;t always cut and dry, and it will change depends on the situation and the person involved.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Types of Motivation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Now, there isn&#8217;t just one kind of motivation. Most people won&#8217;t get out of bed just because of they want to, but rather because something is motivating and like a little voice telling them to get up.\u00a0 For some it&#8217;s a paycheck, and for others it might be going to see a friend you hadn&#8217;t seen in a while.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Extrinsic Motivation\n<ul>\n<li>Usually linked with a physical reward\n<ul>\n<li>Candy, paycheck, grades, a &#8220;carrot on a stick&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Good motivator for tasks that are mundane, boring, or simple<\/li>\n<li>Students often don&#8217;t care about the material being taught, but rather the physical they receive for completing something<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Intrinsic Motivation\n<ul>\n<li>Linked with non-tangible rewards (not physical)\n<ul>\n<li>Feeling joy for doing a task, having a since of pride in a task, giving praise<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Good motivator for more intriguing tasks<\/li>\n<li>Students learn more and better when they enjoy a task or feel they are actually contributing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Motivation can come in all shapes and sizes.\u00a0 It depends on the person to decide what motivates them and gets them going.\u00a0 In a classroom, students are motivated by doing things that they love, or exploring things they have an interest in.\u00a0 Students want to succeed and do well, and not letting reach that full potential is what stops the motivation.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone \" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/i.pinimg.com\/736x\/83\/5c\/15\/835c156af1e8ff62537706c0b896f08b--inspirational-quotes-images-great-quotes.jpg?resize=265%2C383&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"265\" height=\"383\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Importance of Intrinsic Motivation (and Extrinsic)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Intrinsic motivation is difficult to foster.\u00a0 It takes lots of work, just as much motivation, and even more care.\u00a0 It&#8217;s up to a teacher to get the students showing intrinsic motivation, as you are the one that has some control of the lessons.\u00a0 But if you can shape a lesson to get your students engaged and interested in what they are learning, then the intrinsic motivation will follow.<\/p>\n<p>Students learn best when intrinsic motivation is given.\u00a0 They gain a genuine interest and begin to care about their learning.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not all about the grades when you see intrinsic motivation present.\u00a0 This doesn&#8217;t mean extrinsic motivation doesn&#8217;t have a place in the classroom.\u00a0 Extrinsic motivation is beneficial when your students are learning something very simple or mundane that would be hard to make interesting, such as learning the vocabulary for a lesson.\u00a0 These tasks are incredibly difficult to create true intrinsic motivation and using extrinsic is more effective.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Stay hungry for knowledge! ~ Carl<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/motivation?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#motivation<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/quote?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#quote<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/hu7bu8EMZ7\">pic.twitter.com\/hu7bu8EMZ7<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; MarketGlider (@marketgliders) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/marketgliders\/status\/913945503636819975?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 30, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script data-jetpack-boost=\"ignore\" async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>So what are the elements to intrinsic motivation? What makes it tic?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Autonomy<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This is what gets students feeling like they have a stake in their learning<\/li>\n<li>Students are players in the process\n<ul>\n<li>They want to get involved and participating in what the are doing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Students care about their learning, they don&#8217;t want to hate learning\n<ul>\n<li>Students do want to learn, but if you cut them from the equation, then they end up feeling like they have no say in how\/what they learn<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Let students expand their horizons\n<ul>\n<li>Creativity is a spark for every student<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t force them to follow one set of guidelines for an assignment, give them some creative freedom<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Mastery<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This is what students and yourself have a goal to achieve<\/li>\n<li>Mastery takes time to develop, but can never be fully reached\n<ul>\n<li>For every step you get to full mastery, a new step can come in that will improve that mastery<\/li>\n<li>Like an asymptote<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Mastery is difficult, and many students will lose the way\n<ul>\n<li>It&#8217;s going to cause them pain, but keep pushing them and supporting them and they can make it<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Challenging their understandings and keeping them engaged will keep the mastery growing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Purpose<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This brings students truly into the lesson<\/li>\n<li>They begin to take an interest when they have a\u00a0<em>reason<\/em> to\n<ul>\n<li>Link their favorite subject to your class<\/li>\n<li>Make the topics for a project more open ended and give them multiple ways to go about the project<\/li>\n<li>Relate lessons to their lives<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The more value you can give something, the more likely they are to learn it<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone \" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.quotehd.com\/imagequotes\/authors3\/benjamin-disraeli-quote-the-secret-to-success-is-constancy-to-purpose.jpg?resize=288%2C288\" width=\"288\" height=\"288\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s all about giving the students a reason to care, pushing them forward when they do care, and giving them a stake in their learning.\u00a0 If you don&#8217;t provide this, then the students will never truly learn.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dan Ariely: What makes us feel good about our work?\" src=\"https:\/\/embed.ted.com\/talks\/dan_ariely_what_makes_us_feel_good_about_our_work\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>A person&#8217;s motivation doesn&#8217;t change based on where they are, how they are motivated for each task will stay the same, even in a different place.\u00a0 Keep your students engaged and loving what they are doing, and it will make a world of difference.\u00a0 Maybe they&#8217;ll be driven to get out of bed just because they want to learn in your class today.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>Drive.
