The days where things get tough after facing challenge after challenge with our students. No matter what the media says, education isn&#8217;t all finger-painting and crafts.<\/p>\n<p>Since everyone here already knows that, I believe that it would do us well to talk about some of the challenges that we will face as science educators, and what we can do to overcome them!<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tsn-newsletter.s3.amazonaws.com\/201720-article-bolsta-1.jpeg\" alt=\"Image result for facing a challenge\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><strong>(Some) Challenges We Will Face<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Keeping students ENGAGED<\/li>\n<li>Parents not wanting their students to learn about controversial topics<\/li>\n<li>Overcoming misconceptions (THIS IS A BIG ONE)<\/li>\n<li>Promoting inquiry as opposed to handing students the facts<\/li>\n<li>Emphasizing learning over the grade<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These are all things that we will face as science teachers, and to be perfectly honest, some of these are really hard to overcome. However, we&#8217;re not in this alone, so here are some ways to overcome each challenge!<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" height=\"500\" width=\"1140\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/diamondbooks.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Overcoming-Challenges-1140x500.jpg?resize=1140%2C500&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Image result for overcoming challenges\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Overcoming the Challenges<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><em>Keeping Students ENGAGED<\/em><\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>We have to make sure that we are doing everything in our power to not only know our students, but to teach to their interests. Students love learning about things that can apply to their lives!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><em>Parents and Controversy<\/em><\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Make sure to always be in contact with the parents of your students! Keeping that open line increases the likelihood that your parents will trust you. Also, making sure to visit both sides of any argument will assuage any fears that the parents may have about the topic!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Misconceptions<\/span><\/em><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Misconceptions can be one of the\u00a0<em>hardest<\/em> things that we will have to face in our careers. In a day and age where media literacy is at an all time low, the best we can do is double down efforts to teach our students not only media literacy, but also ensuring students that it is ok to be wrong, as long as they are open to alternative ideas and concepts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Promoting Inquiry<\/span><\/em><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Students will love inquiry if you foster a classroom environment that idolizes the learning\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">journey<\/span> rather than the learning\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">destination<\/span>!
