Have you ever applied that thought to your classroom? To the student who doesn&#8217;t seem to be focused? Or the student that&#8217;s late to class every day? Or the student who seems to not even care?<\/p>\n<p>It is our responsibility to make sure we check up on students to know what is going on inside and outside of the school walls that could be affecting their learning. Students could be or could have been experiencing things that are considered traumatic.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2167\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/edt431-531\/files\/2019\/04\/Screen-Shot-2019-04-24-at-1.26.34-PM-300x169.png?resize=300%2C169\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/exemplary-science-teaching\/files\/2019\/04\/Screen-Shot-2019-04-24-at-1.26.34-PM.png?resize=300%2C169&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/exemplary-science-teaching\/files\/2019\/04\/Screen-Shot-2019-04-24-at-1.26.34-PM.png?resize=768%2C433&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/exemplary-science-teaching\/files\/2019\/04\/Screen-Shot-2019-04-24-at-1.26.34-PM.png?resize=1024%2C578&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/exemplary-science-teaching\/files\/2019\/04\/Screen-Shot-2019-04-24-at-1.26.34-PM.png?w=1212&amp;ssl=1 1212w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What is trauma?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Trauma in students can stem from:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Substance abuse in the house<\/li>\n<li>Parental separation or divorce<\/li>\n<li>Mental illness in the home<\/li>\n<li>Witnessing domestic violence<\/li>\n<li>Suicidal household member<\/li>\n<li>Death of a parent or loved one<\/li>\n<li>Parental incarceration<\/li>\n<li>Experience of abuse or neglect<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>(Souers, 2016)<\/p>\n<p>Any of these kinds of things could be affecting how a child is behaving in school and can distract them from their learning.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What can teachers do?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>&#8220;These children aren&#8217;t seeking attention.
