A reflection on DRIVE: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us<\/em><\/h1>\n

An introductory thought:<\/strong><\/p>\n

When you wake up in the morning and have a long to-do list, or a lot of work to do at school, what motivates you to power through and get it done? Is it a promotion and good grades? Or rather the sense of achievement and self-progress you’re making in your life? Your answer to this question may start to tell you something about your motivational behaviors and whether they are intrinsic or extrinsic.<\/p>\n

Brief definitions:<\/strong><\/p>\n

EXTRINSIC motivation=\u00a0A reward, demand, or obligation that requires the\u00a0achievement of a goal.<\/p>\n

INTRINSIC motivation= Striving towards a goal for the sole purpose of personal satisfaction or accomplishment; without the contribution of outside factor.<\/p>\n

<\/h2>\n

Type I Behavior:<\/h2>\n

-This term can be synonymous with “intrinsically motivated people”<\/p>\n

-Fueled by intrinsic desires rather than extrinsic ones<\/p>\n

-Concerned with the inherent satisfaction of the activity itself<\/p>\n

-This behavioral pattern is not a fixed trait, but rather emerges from experience and circumstance<\/p>\n

-This behavior will usually outperform those with extrinsic motivation in the long run<\/p>\n

-It is inexpensive, safe, and endlessly renewable as a source of motivation<\/p>\n

-Closely interrelated with the sens of autonomy, mastery, and purpose<\/p>\n

-Can increase self-esteem and greater general well-being<\/p>\n

-Uses recognition for accomplishments as a form of feedback, but the recognition itself is not a goal<\/p>\n
