Your parents? Your siblings? The smell of clean sheets? A homemade meal?<\/p>\n<p>If this is the case, you are <strong>lucky<\/strong>. Not all children come from homes such as these, and we&#8217;re all going to have them in our classrooms. We, as teachers, need to create <strong>safe<\/strong> spaces for these children and make them &#8220;keep their heads in the game&#8221; at school. This is why it is so important to encourage our students to be <strong>resilient science learners<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How<\/strong> do we do this?<img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2136 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/edt431-531\/files\/2019\/04\/Screen-Shot-2019-04-22-at-1.56.23-PM-300x191.png?resize=186%2C119\" alt=\"\" width=\"186\" height=\"119\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/exemplary-science-teaching\/files\/2019\/04\/Screen-Shot-2019-04-22-at-1.56.23-PM.png?resize=300%2C191&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/exemplary-science-teaching\/files\/2019\/04\/Screen-Shot-2019-04-22-at-1.56.23-PM.png?w=572&amp;ssl=1 572w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 186px) 100vw, 186px\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;We must validate and reconcile ourselves to our trauma history, yet we needn&#8217;t be governed by it,&#8221; (Souers, 2016).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Make sure your students understand that you are an important resource in their lives. You are there to help them, not to make their lives worse.<\/li>\n<li>Understand that you can&#8217;t always relate to the trauma these students are living with, but will try your best to be there for them.<\/li>\n<li>Realize that if students aren&#8217;t into a &#8220;learning mode&#8221; they simply won&#8217;t learn.
