Have you noticed many educated people in very public roles in our world make statements or tweet about how fake global warming is? Where do you think this idea comes from?<\/p>\n<h2>&#8220;Global warming is a myth.&#8221; &#8211; a misconception<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.brutallyhonest.org\/.a\/6a00d834516bb169e20167613c45e5970b-800wi\" alt=\"Image result for global warming hoax\" width=\"397\" height=\"266\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Misconceptions &#8211; What are they and how do they happen?<\/h2>\n<p>Misconceptions in science typically occur because of an initial <strong>misunderstanding<\/strong> that is perpetuated by multiple sources portraying similar information.<\/p>\n<p>This can be in the form of<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>textbooks<\/li>\n<li>figures<\/li>\n<li>popular diagrams<\/li>\n<li>media sources<\/li>\n<li>everyday conversation<\/li>\n<li>politics<\/li>\n<li>or really anything that decides to incorporate science<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However, misconceptions can actually<em> help<\/em> students learn.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/kleencarpetcleaning.com\/v1\/klctn\/uploads\/2014\/11\/misconception.jpg?resize=317%2C270&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Image result for misconception\" width=\"317\" height=\"270\" \/>By being able to discuss with students why things they may believe do not have scientific evidence, students not only learn by <strong>expanding their knowledge<\/strong> on that topic but also how to <strong>think critically<\/strong> and <strong>examine<\/strong> other things in life.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Teachers who know their students&#8217; most common misconceptions are more likely to increase their students&#8217; science knowledge than those who do not.&#8221; -Sadler, 2016<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Global warming, or more commonly, climate change, is not a myth and has a plethora of scientific evidence to support it.<\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"13 Misconceptions About Global Warming\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OWXoRSIxyIU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This video does a good job of taking many of the misconceptions around climate change and showing data and evidence to show that they are simply myths, not climate change itself.<\/p>\n<p>To be a good teacher, you need to address the misconceptions that will arise in your class. Your students will learn more and you will be helping to create a more scientifically literate\u00a0population.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.apaonline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/hands-2082x1171.jpg?resize=523%2C294&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Image result for diversity\" width=\"523\" height=\"294\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With this being said, you also need to respect the <em>religious<\/em> or <em>cultural<\/em> beliefs of your students. Some may come with other ideas about nature or how things work, and you need to make sure that you are <strong>not negating<\/strong> their beliefs.
