Now name me five more. Now, what do they all have in common? If I was a betting man, I&#8217;d bet that you just named me six white male scientists. Am I right? Yeah? That&#8217;s unfortunate, isn&#8217;t it?<\/p>\n<p>Now, try to name me a scientist that isn&#8217;t an old white man. How many can you name? If you can name me more than three, I&#8217;d be tickled pink. If you can&#8217;t name more than three, then that&#8217;s alright, but it has to change. There needs to be a bigger push for minorities in the STEM fields.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.onlineuniversities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/10-Startling-Stats-About-Minorities-in-STEM.png?resize=467%2C350&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Image result for minorities in stem infographic\" width=\"467\" height=\"350\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Let&#8217;s Get Some Stats Up In Here<\/h3>\n<p>Nothing says convincing like some delicious statistics, fresh off the press. Here are some of my favorite:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>According to OnlineColleges.net:\n<ul>\n<li>Less than 20% of the people who study STEM fields at the collegiate level are women<\/li>\n<li>Less than 7% of people who study physical sciences are minorities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>According to nsf.gov:\n<ul>\n<li>Less than 10% of STEM degrees handed out between 1995-2014 were to African Americans<\/li>\n<li>Less than\u00a0<strong>2%\u00a0<\/strong>of engineering degrees between 1995-2014 were to African American females<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now, these are not pretty numbers. In fact, these are some of the ugliest numbers I have ever seen. But how do we fix them?\u00a0<strong>BY GETTING MINORITIES INTO STEM!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1699\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/edt431-531\/files\/2018\/11\/6779d6a9-097d-4a8e-bb9c-06e03a93ece2-300x300.png?resize=300%2C300\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/exemplary-science-teaching\/files\/2018\/11\/6779d6a9-097d-4a8e-bb9c-06e03a93ece2.png?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/exemplary-science-teaching\/files\/2018\/11\/6779d6a9-097d-4a8e-bb9c-06e03a93ece2.png?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/exemplary-science-teaching\/files\/2018\/11\/6779d6a9-097d-4a8e-bb9c-06e03a93ece2.png?w=500&amp;ssl=1 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>How to get Minorities into STEM<\/h3>\n<p>In order to get more non-white, cis-gendered men into this fantastic field of wonder and creativity, there has to be a push from the privileged. There needs to be more people on the top vying for those less fortunate. I&#8217;m not talking charity work here, I&#8217;m talking about people who can use their places of influence to do just that: influence.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>People with privilege need to advocate for a minority push<\/li>\n<li>Minorities need to be encouraged at a young age<\/li>\n<li>Minorities (especially women) need to be shown that the sciences are just as important as their other subjects<\/li>\n<li>Things like after-school clubs, mentorships, and summer camps are fun ways to get kids involved in STEM<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here is a video about an app called Gidget that is helping get women and minorities into STEM<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"New App Helps Attract Women and Minorities to STEM\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5k0IlM0ZU6M?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>What Will I Do?<\/h3>\n<p>If you couldn&#8217;t already tell, I am extremely passionate about getting more minorities into STEM fields. You know what they say, &#8220;be the change you want to see,&#8221; so here are some ways that I plan on helping get the diversity gap to completely close<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Host clubs focused on minorities in STEM<\/li>\n<li>Teach my students about different minorities, attempting to have at least one scientist for every demographic in my class<\/li>\n<li>Provide interactive and fun examples of STEM in my classroom so that everyone can be excited and interested in STEM<\/li>\n<li>Advocate for the minorities that I will have, and give them as many resources as possible so that they can succeed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Diversity strengthens not only us as scientists, but also as people. Having more diversity in the STEM fields will do nothing but improve on what we already have.
