So, what are the numbers?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Female students&#8217; achievement in math and science is pretty equal with their male peers<img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1682 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/edt431-531\/files\/2018\/11\/Screen-Shot-2018-11-13-at-7.28.08-PM-1.png?resize=132%2C178\" alt=\"\" width=\"132\" height=\"178\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Males are more likely to take advanced level AP courses in STEM subjects\n<ul>\n<li>Females are more likely to take AP courses in English and History<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As teachers, it&#8217;s our job to encourage all students to pursue any career that they are interested in.<\/p>\n<p>I think this\u00a0<strong>blog\u00a0<\/strong>puts it perfectly:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This needs to change, as the lack of women in STEM will continue to plague our country until all students, regardless of sex, have adequate opportunities to explore math and science through out elementary, middle and high school.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edutopia.org\/blog\/5-ways-girls-involved-STEM-karen-purcell\">https:\/\/www.edutopia.org\/blog\/5-ways-girls-involved-STEM-karen-purcell<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1684 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/edt431-531\/files\/2018\/11\/Screen-Shot-2018-11-14-at-6.43.35-AM-300x174.png?resize=300%2C174\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"174\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/exemplary-science-teaching\/files\/2018\/11\/Screen-Shot-2018-11-14-at-6.43.35-AM.png?resize=300%2C174&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/exemplary-science-teaching\/files\/2018\/11\/Screen-Shot-2018-11-14-at-6.43.35-AM.png?w=588&amp;ssl=1 588w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I highly encourage you to watch this next <strong>video<\/strong> titled:\u00a0<em>Girls in STEM: A New Generation of Women in Science<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>See what President Obama &amp; less capable<\/li>\n<li>Typically, there&#8217;s a higher pay salary for STEM jobs, meaning that the lack of women contributes to the gender salary gap<\/li>\n<li>A lack of females in these fields means fewer female role models for girls interested in STEM<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"media-image aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pbs.twimg.com\/profile_images\/435210177910800384\/fNma9vYV_400x400.png?resize=170%2C170&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"STEM Women\" width=\"170\" height=\"170\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>How, as a teacher, do I instill STEM awareness in my classroom?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Have my students recognize people in STEM, other than males\n<ul>\n<li>Some type of research project where they have to research a minority in STEM\n<ul>\n<li>Think &#8220;meet the scientist&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Have a &#8220;Scientist of the Week&#8221; where we discuss a minority who is already in a STEM field, and talk about what they have done<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"irc_mi aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thetechedvocate.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/1-660x400.jpg?resize=304%2C184&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Image result for stem in classrooms\" width=\"304\" height=\"184\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As parents, teachers, role models, siblings, friends, etc., it&#8217;s our job to encourage everyone in our lives to pursue the career of their dreams, no matter what field it&#8217;s in.
