The current model is so focused on extrinsic rewards that don&#8217;t provide students with the same motivation that intrinsic motivation does.\u00a0 The ASAP Science video helps elaborate a little bit on why this isn&#8217;t great:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Science Of Motivation\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pZT-FZqfxZA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Play is the strongest motivator for sustained behavioral changes.&#8221; This quote has one great word to think of: play. This isn&#8217;t saying everything&#8217;s a game &#8211; just that removing any sense of fun and play decreases motivation!<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/yourpositiveoasis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_5062.png?resize=459%2C459&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Image result for motivation\" width=\"459\" height=\"459\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Science teaching lend itself so much to intrinsic motivation. Internal gratification from figuring out complex problems is so much greater than that from menial tasks like writing down definitions. Areas where using intrinsic motivation works in the science classroom could be:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Lab activities<\/strong>; calculating where to put a cup to catch a marble dropped down a slope.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Projects<\/strong>; rather than doing research on an already existing problem with an answer, try to figure one out that doesn&#8217;t.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But this isn&#8217;t to say that using reward systems are never a good idea.
