It&#8217;s the basic motivation that is the reason we respond and do certain things in day-to-day life.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Intrinsic vs. Extrinsic Motivation<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1313\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/edt431-531\/files\/2018\/09\/intrinsic-300x154.png?resize=561%2C288\" alt=\"\" width=\"561\" height=\"288\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/exemplary-science-teaching\/files\/2018\/09\/intrinsic.png?resize=300%2C154&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/exemplary-science-teaching\/files\/2018\/09\/intrinsic.png?resize=768%2C395&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/exemplary-science-teaching\/files\/2018\/09\/intrinsic.png?w=831&amp;ssl=1 831w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 561px) 100vw, 561px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the above infographic, it shows the main differences between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Intrinsic<\/strong>: The desire to do something because you <em>want<\/em> to. Students often don&#8217;t come in intrinsically motivated until a topic genuinely interests them. In the classroom, this is what is what teachers want to guide their students towards.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Extrinsic<\/strong>: The desire to do something because you get <em>rewarded<\/em> or <em>punished<\/em>. This is typically how most students start off in the classroom. They are driven by grades and extra credit and not the desire to learn topics due to their own curiosity.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Science of Learning - What motivates students?\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kIfqXbET3nM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In the above video, it talks about how teachers can guide motivation in the classroom for all students.<\/p>\n<p>In Daniel Pink&#8217;s book <em>DRiVE,\u00a0<\/em>he talks about three main components that go into what drives human beings.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Mastery: Wanting to get better at a certain skill<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Students that want that mastery will want to be the best at it and perfect the craft until they can&#8217;t anymore. The gratification of mastering something is satisfying for everyone, including students. Intrinsic motivation typically motivates someone to want to master a topic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Autonomy: Self direction<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Students want control over what they are learning, I mean, so does everyone. Giving students that opportunity to take control will feed their autonomous drive and will in the end, intrinsically motivate them to want to learn more.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Purpose: The reason\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Students will ask, &#8220;When will we use this in real life?&#8221; or &#8220;What&#8217;s the <em>purpose<\/em> in learning this?&#8221; and expect you to have a concrete answer. They want this confirmation to feed their drive for purpose. If students see the purpose for what they&#8217;re doing, they&#8217;re more likely to commit to it whole-heartedly and want to go even further into a subject.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Students LOVE to learn about topics that interest them.
