curiosity can lead the discussion into a new direction, and the key to correctly teaching in the margins is to follow those threads while keeping it relevant to course material.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1249\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/edt431-531\/files\/2018\/09\/marg-199x300.jpg?resize=199%2C300\" alt=\"\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/exemplary-science-teaching\/files\/2018\/09\/marg.jpg?resize=199%2C300&amp;ssl=1 199w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/exemplary-science-teaching\/files\/2018\/09\/marg.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The examples of teaching in the margins that are, to me,\u00a0most meaningful are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Expanding on students\u2019 questions<\/li>\n<li>Incorporating discovery-based assignments in the classroom<\/li>\n<li>Creating as many instructional conversation opportunities as possible<img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1248\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/edt431-531\/files\/2018\/09\/marginss-300x281.gif?resize=300%2C281\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"281\" \/><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Margins, unlike teachable moments, are planned\u00a0out.\u00a0 A teacher knows when they are going to be able to teach in the margins and how to direct their classes to them.\u00a0 Teachable moments are impromptu and less structured.\u00a0 While these moments are useful, the beauty of margins is being able to structure a lesson around them.\u00a0 The margins create teachable moments.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Teaching Outside the Box | Caleb Lack | TEDxUCO\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/thabLMyxzqY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t keep doing what I\u2019ve been doing,\u201d says psychologist and professor Caleb Lack, who shared his experience in teaching \u201coutside the box.\u201d\u00a0 Caleb is one of many examples of teachers who took the risk to teach in the margins.<\/p>\n<p>Starr Sackstein, the author of the article that was used as an example of the margins, gave an attempt that crashed and burned.\u00a0 Rather than throwing in the towel, she admitted to her students what she had done wrong, they worked together, and the new lesson was a great success.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Ann writes that, \u201c[margins are] where life is often riskier for its inhabitants,\u201d and I think this holds true as a metaphor.\u00a0 The lesson becomes riskier and requires more energy.\u00a0 Not everyone will understand why it\u2019s happening, and there will be skeptics who say the lesson is \u201csafer\u201d in a different direction.\u00a0\u00a0The return, however, is well worth the risk.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1250\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/edt431-531\/files\/2018\/09\/margin-300x188.png?resize=300%2C188\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"188\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/exemplary-science-teaching\/files\/2018\/09\/margin.png?resize=300%2C188&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/exemplary-science-teaching\/files\/2018\/09\/margin.png?w=449&amp;ssl=1 449w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A teacher who is willing to teach in the margins has everything to gain.\u00a0 They&#8217;ll get students who<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Are willing to collaborate with each other.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t feel like they\u2019re wasting their time because they can see the relation of content to the \u201creal world.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Score higher on tests because they were actually engaged in the classroom instead of reading a collection of sentences on a page.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1252\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/edt431-531\/files\/2018\/09\/tweet-300x137.png?resize=300%2C137\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"137\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/exemplary-science-teaching\/files\/2018\/09\/tweet.png?resize=300%2C137&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.miamioh.edu\/exemplary-science-teaching\/files\/2018\/09\/tweet.png?w=464&amp;ssl=1 464w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>Teaching in the margins means creating an atypical plan so that students see a new perspective of learning.\u00a0 Students&#8217;
