I\u2019d like to apply the Concept Based Curriculum Instruction to the admission presentations we do for prospective families. This is essentially a PowerPoint with a TON of information about Miami University \u2013 merit scholarships, applications dates, statistics and ratings.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Concept Based Curriculum and Instruction to be applied by adding a series of questions throughout the slideshow\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;adapt[ing] lower level curriculum materials to teach for deeper understanding&#8221; (Erickson 10)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>I cannot change slideshow info (because it is copyrighted) but I can enhance slides through what I say<\/li>\n<li>Slideshow reveals facts and it\u2019s my job to introduce the concepts and generalization thinking<\/li>\n<li>MTR \u2013 Making Thinking Relevant &#8211; how does all the information that I am spewing out have any relation??<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Concept<\/strong>: College is necessary\u00a0in order to excel. Being a college graduate with a minimum bachelor degree allows for more career growth opportunities.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Conceptual lens<\/strong>: college degree\/no college degree<\/li>\n<li><strong>Enduring Understanding<\/strong>: Miami is a public ivy offering a rigorous academic environment designed to prepare you for success. Attending Miami will prepare you for the future.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Guiding concepts:\u00a0<\/strong>Higher Education is necessary to get a distinguished job; Higher Education develops critical thinking; A Liberal Arts foundation is necessary to continue developing\/learning as a working adult.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Guiding Questions<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Factual questions:\n<ul>\n<li>What is Miami\u2019s ranking according to US News and World Report?<\/li>\n<li>How long has Miami been considered the #1 institution for undergraduate teaching?<\/li>\n<li>What about Miami\u2019s size (17,200) makes it little and big?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Conceptual Questions:\n<ul>\n<li>What other schools can offer a rigorous academic environment?<\/li>\n<li>Where do we see other examples of liberal arts education and well roundness in our life? Why does Miami choose to embrace this platform?<\/li>\n<li>Everyone\u2019s path is different but the end goal is the same: becoming employed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Debate Question:\n<ul>\n<li>Can one be as successful without a college degree?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>Unit 2:\u00a0Counseling 1:1<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>CBCI can be used in a counseling session with a student or family.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>These sessions are specific to an area of study as students often want to learn more information on a major\/program in order to make a decision about their college destination<\/li>\n<li>CBCI can be used almost in a reverse \u201cStructure of Knowledge Model\u201d where the student shares the concept and\/or generalization and I provide the topic\/facts\n<ul>\n<li>Hopefully the topic\/facts provided match what the student is looking for<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>EXAMPLE: A student is looking for an engineering program for their college studies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-939\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.miamioh.edu\/edt222-2017\/files\/2018\/07\/Scanned-from-a-Xerox-Multifunction-Printer-4-page-001-232x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"517\" height=\"668\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.miamioh.edu\/edt222-2017\/files\/2018\/07\/Scanned-from-a-Xerox-Multifunction-Printer-4-page-001-232x300.jpg 232w, https:\/\/sites.miamioh.edu\/edt222-2017\/files\/2018\/07\/Scanned-from-a-Xerox-Multifunction-Printer-4-page-001-768x994.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.miamioh.edu\/edt222-2017\/files\/2018\/07\/Scanned-from-a-Xerox-Multifunction-Printer-4-page-001-791x1024.jpg 791w, https:\/\/sites.miamioh.edu\/edt222-2017\/files\/2018\/07\/Scanned-from-a-Xerox-Multifunction-Printer-4-page-001.jpg 1275w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 517px) 100vw, 517px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What is drawn here is a model that can be used reversely (as mentioned) and traditionally, hence the arrow point both ways. Since each counseling session is unique, I\u2019ve prepared a model that could be used in situations where I present a generalization and the student presents a generalization.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>From the presentation or counseling session, hopefully students are able to gather a worldly end product that is applicable to life.<em><strong> It&#8217;s not just about facts, but how this information enhances your knowledge.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>I learned that CBCI is really about applying the knowledge you\u2019re learning and making it applicable for life. It\u2019s not just retaining information to get a good score on a test.
