{"id":708,"date":"2017-07-06T11:49:10","date_gmt":"2017-07-06T15:49:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.miamioh.edu\/edt222-2017\/?p=708"},"modified":"2018-05-24T22:12:47","modified_gmt":"2018-05-25T02:12:47","slug":"pbl-frydryk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.miamioh.edu\/edt222-2017\/2017\/07\/pbl-frydryk\/","title":{"rendered":"PBL &#8211; Frydryk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><u>Title<\/u>:\u00a0 Cats Don\u2019t Like Swimming\u2026 Unless it\u2019s a Wildcat!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-710\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.miamioh.edu\/edt222-2017\/files\/2017\/07\/pbl-pool-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.miamioh.edu\/edt222-2017\/files\/2017\/07\/pbl-pool-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.miamioh.edu\/edt222-2017\/files\/2017\/07\/pbl-pool.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><u>Description<\/u>:\u00a0 There\u2019s no public pool in Harrison \u2013 until now!\u00a0 With your group, you will explore all of the details of planning for, building, and managing a public pool for Harrison.\u00a0 There are quite a few things to consider:\u00a0 location, builders, the pool itself, employees, etc.\u00a0 Create a presentation that includes all pertinent details that City Council would need in order to decide whether to move forward with opening a public pool in Harrison.<\/p>\n<p><u>Standards:<br \/>\n<\/u>Suggested\/encouraged content:<br \/>\n<strong>Optimization<\/strong> to figure out price to charge\/ideal number of customers\/size of area where pool will be<br \/>\n<strong>Integrals<\/strong> to calculate volume of pool (once size is determined)<br \/>\n<strong>Related rates<\/strong> \u2013 filling the pool<\/p>\n<p><u>Prior Knowledge Needed\/When to Teach:<br \/>\n<\/u>Calculus.\u00a0 Students should be familiar with optimizing functions, solving related rates equations, and using integrals to calculate integrals.<\/p>\n<p><u>Timing:<\/u> 4 weeks total, but project may span many months as more content is learned<\/p>\n<p><u>Materials\/Resources<\/u>:<br \/>\nComputers<br \/>\nPool builders<br \/>\nCity council\/zoning\/building policies<\/p>\n<p><u>Outline:<br \/>\n<\/u>3-4 days (blocks) at a time will be provided for this project.\u00a0 As more content is learned (and students see the room for application), another Block will be provided.\u00a0 <strong>With each of these Blocks, the content that is suggested to be used has not been taught yet, but is next is succession.\u00a0 This is done in an effort for students to use their direct prior knowledge to recognize the need for the next topic in their project.\u00a0 <\/strong>Suggested Blocks are given below.<br \/>\n<strong>Block 1<\/strong>: (3 days)<br \/>\nGroups are decided.\u00a0 It is recommended that multiple group activities are done before this in order to assist the teacher in grouping students in a mutually beneficial way.<br \/>\nProblem is introduced.\u00a0 Use a Think, Puzzle, Explore with students to individually, then in groups, then as a class discuss the problem.<br \/>\nShare the Final Project Rubric with the students and discuss.<br \/>\nBegin preliminary planning.<br \/>\nReflection (see prompts below).<br \/>\n<strong>Block 2<\/strong>: (after derivatives are taught. Suggested content:\u00a0 optimization. 4 days.)<br \/>\nStudents are prompted to consider the location and physical size of the pool (maximize area, minimize resources).<br \/>\nReflection.<br \/>\n<strong>Block 3<\/strong>: (after derivatives are taught.
