{"id":637,"date":"2017-07-02T23:36:22","date_gmt":"2017-07-03T03:36:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.miamioh.edu\/edt222-2017\/?p=637"},"modified":"2018-05-24T22:12:47","modified_gmt":"2018-05-25T02:12:47","slug":"walters-cooperative-learning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.miamioh.edu\/edt222-2017\/2017\/07\/walters-cooperative-learning\/","title":{"rendered":"Walters-Cooperative Learning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>TEAM BUILDING Lesson:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-638\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.miamioh.edu\/edt222-2017\/files\/2017\/07\/teambuilding-300x197.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"197\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.miamioh.edu\/edt222-2017\/files\/2017\/07\/teambuilding-300x197.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.miamioh.edu\/edt222-2017\/files\/2017\/07\/teambuilding.jpg 750w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This team building activity is for the beginning of the school year as I introduce the idea of critical thinking skills in the math classroom. \u00a0I would organize my groups within my classroom in groups of 4 people. \u00a0This is called the Paper Tower Challenge. \u00a0Each group is given:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">2 sheets of 8.5 x 11 paper<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">40 centimeters of tape<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">1 pair of scissors<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">1 pencil<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">1 &#8211; 12 inch ruler<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The goal of the group is to build the tallest tower. \u00a0The one rule is that the tower can not be taped on the desk or wall. \u00a0Each member of the group is responsible for a certain supply to make sure that all are participating. \u00a0For example, one person is in charge of the tape and they are the only one who can distribute out the tape. \u00a0At the end of this activity, we discuss what it looks like to work well as a group and what qualities should always be included in group work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Here is an example you could show the class when they are FINISHED with their. (I wouldn&#8217;t show it before hand or they may try to just copy this idea)<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"EASY TO MAKE: Paper Tower Challenge Tutorial\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tuEBEKOProY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>COLLABORATIVE LESSON (Statue of Liberty):<\/b><\/p>\n<p>I used the CO-OP CO-OP model for this activity. \u00a0We have been working a lot with proportions in my 7th grade class as well as scale factor before this activity\/lesson is introduced. \u00a0Students are NOT told to use Proportions in this lesson as they can use any strategy that they would. \u00a0However, most students end up using proportions in this.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-644\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.miamioh.edu\/edt222-2017\/files\/2017\/07\/statue_of_liberty1-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.miamioh.edu\/edt222-2017\/files\/2017\/07\/statue_of_liberty1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.miamioh.edu\/edt222-2017\/files\/2017\/07\/statue_of_liberty1-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.miamioh.edu\/edt222-2017\/files\/2017\/07\/statue_of_liberty1.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>Student Centered Discussion<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We begin this activity by a picture of the Statue of Liberty is placed up on the Smart Board<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We will do a See, Think, Wonder before we begin class discussion<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">What is it that you See?<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">What do you think about the Statue of Liberty?<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">What do you wonder about the Statue of Liberty and how it is created?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We will talk about what we know about the Statue of Liberty and how we think Math plays into the creation of the Statue of Liberty.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Then the question is posed (1)<\/span><b>\u201cIf I know that the Statue of Liberty has a nose that is 4ft, 6 inches long, find the length of her pinky finger, how tall she is, and the length of her right arm.\u201d (2) How does this compare to another well known statue?<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Team Selection<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">All groups will be focusing on question (1) with the Statue of Liberty. \u00a0Then, the other well known statues they will be looking at are listed below.
