On October 24, company officials from Terillium, a Cincinnati-based consulting company focusing on enterprise resource planning, held a workshop attended by students majoring in accountancy and supply chain and operations management. President David Woodworth<\/a>, VP of NetSuite & Marketing Steve May<\/a>, and Career Development Coordinator Molly Monson<\/a> shared the company’s best practices for communicating\u2014both internally and with clients. The event culminated with a mini-presentation competition, which was won by a team comprising accountancy majors Tommy Gibbons ’27<\/a>, Tom Fisher ’28<\/a>, and Emerson Weiland ’29<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Terillium professionals gave a condensed version of the same presentation training they provide to their own employees, which they dubbed the “Presentation Zen” framework. Key points in this framework include simplifying the face of the slides (e.g., not more than six words per page), focusing on storytelling instead of listing bullet points, and using visual cues or visualizations to convey meanings instead of blocks of text (i.e., a picture is worth a thousand words). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, teams of three students each were tasked to apply those Presentation Zen skills to a mini-case and given 20 minutes to come up with a 5-minute presentation. Students received real-time feedback and suggestions. Accountancy Professor Yibo (James) Zhang<\/a> who helped organize the event, was part of the audience. He said, “From a faculty perspective, this event was tremendously useful for students to improve their presentation and slide design skills as well as teamworking skills under time pressure.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The team’s presentation answered the simple question “What would make Oxford better?” The winning team focused on a lighthearted answer\u2014a Culver’s restaurant\u2014featuring it as “a place that brings a community together through the nice workers, a place to get together to eat at, and adding a home aspect feeling to out of state students from Wisconsin and Minnesota.” According to Gibbons, “[In] presenting this pitch, we showed passion towards Culver’s that resonated with the audience, ultimately showing that Culver’s will bring more than just a good food spot for Oxford.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
