This Fall, the Department of Accountancy welcomed back Katie Tew<\/a> (’93, ’99 MAcc) to teach ACC 221, Introduction to Financial Accounting, ushering in hundreds of Farmer Business School students each semester in the first steps of their business education. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tew developed and taught ACC 211, Accounting for Non-Business Majors, from 2016 to 2020. She took a step back from teaching when COVID hit, and she worked as an accounting and HR professional for a number of years. Most recently, she served as CFO and director of HR at JF Kilfoil Co., a Cincinnati-based firm representing manufacturers in the electronics industry. When the current lecturer position opened up, Tew was excited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I love the people I work with and the exposure I get to the business world.  However, teaching and college students are two things I also enjoy, so when this position opened up at Miami I thought it would be a great opportunity and a challenge. The challenge comes with learning how to manage a team of 10 grad assistants and over 1000 students\/year as well as teach larger sections of students effectively. My goal is to give them options of how to ask questions in various ways about accounting so they each feel like their needs are being met. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having completed the first semester, she said, “I’m excited about all the constructive feedback I received after my first semester teaching large sections that will enable me to improve and offer a better classroom experience for students. My goal is for every\u00a0student to feel\u00a0like there are\u00a0learning resources that can help\u00a0 no matter what their\u00a0personality,\u00a0temperament, or learning style is.” More on ACC 221: Students go on an “Accounting Quest”<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Katie and Neal, her husband of 23 years, have two children in college and two still in high school. She loves to cook and create delicious family meals where conversation takes place. She added, “I try to get outside every day no matter the weather and exercise with our two dogs (a golden retriever and a papillon), which I find invigorating and renewing.” <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
