Members of the Accountancy Advisory Group (AAG) gathered on October 26 and 27 to discuss updates on the department’s curriculum and outreach efforts, and to brainstorm strategies to meet the increasing demand for accountants.
Students in ACC 495 (Accounting Analysis) welcomed MAcc graduate BriAuna Keys ’20, a Digital Assurance & Transparency senior associate at PwC, along with PwC campus liaison Christine Frederick, who presented the benefits and risks of using generative AI tools (such as ChatGPT) for accounting tasks.
Accountancy faculty members Jon Pyzoha, Matt Wieland, and Brian Ballou were busy in the month of June as they worked on restructuring the financial statement audit (ACC 453/553) and graduate assurance (ACC 653) courses to reflect the industry’s shift to a digital, platform-based audit approach and expansion of the service from financial reporting to financial/ESG reporting and, likely, to integrated reporting (which includes additional, nonfinancial information).
On September 27, Professor and Interim Department Chair Anne Farrell gave a spoke at the Ohio Society of CPAs Workforce Development Summit from her perspective as the American Accounting Association’s VP-Finance about the national accountancy pipeline challenges.
In August, Professors Jon Pyzoha, Brian Ballou and Dan Heitger visited KPMG Cincinnati to advance their understanding of audit technologies and ESG audit methodologies in the quickly evolving audit landscape. They spent a day with a number of KPMG professionals in audit technology and ESG methodology, including Brian Foster (audit technology business office lead partner), Carl Gerber (audit chief data officer), Paige Wolfenden ’10 (ESG professional practice director), and Kaitelln Gruver (audit managing director).
Miami accountancy and finance alum Aizik Zimerman ’15, who recently completed an MBA at Chicago Booth’s Entrepreneurship Through Acquisition (ETA) program, became the first in this program to complete an acquisition of a business, J. Blanton Plumbing, while still enrolled as a full-time student.
The 12th annual Make it Miami Accounting Camp welcomed high school students from the surrounding area to the Farmer School of Business on July 20-22 for three days of self-development and team-building activities while discovering more about college life and exploring the possibility of an accounting career.
To bring the real world into the classroom, alumni are regularly invited to speak at our introductory accounting courses, ACC 221 (financial accounting) and ACC 222 (managerial accounting).
This week, over 100 kids from the Middletown and Cincinnati regions attended Camp Excell, a 4-day and 3-night camp introducing underrepresented youth in the 6th to 9th grades to various disciplines at Miami’s campus, including the arts and humanities, science, technology, engineering, education, and of course, accountancy.
