If you follow the department’s Instagram page, you’ve likely seen the creative and lively updates from our student specialist for social media, Ally Secor ’25. In her posts, Ally keeps us all informed about campus events, promotes the benefits and career paths for accountancy majors (and minors), and assists with various aspects of the department’s social media strategy.
Ally’s interest in social media started in high school, when she had the opportunity to take a communications internship after her sophomore year. There, she gained experience with platforms such as Canva. She then started working for her father’s business, #MakeShots LLC, where she designed social media graphics. During her first spring semester at Miami, she joined the First-Year Integrated Core (FYIC) social media team, then started working with the Department of Accountancy in the fall of 2023. “I have always enjoyed the creative side of things and social media is an interesting outlet for that to me,” Ally shared.
Ally spends about five hours a week brainstorming ideas and drafting posts for the department’s social media accounts. When deciding what to post, she relies on past experience with similar pages and peer feedback. “A great thing about social media is that it gives you all the numbers on your posts as they happen. So much of how I decide what else to post is based on those numbers and the larger messages we are trying to convey.”
Ally’s appreciation for numbers is not limited to social media: “I took an accounting class my freshman year of high school and thought the work we were doing was interesting. Once I got to Miami, I took ACC 221 and enjoyed the way I had to think to complete the homework and projects and found myself wanting to do that homework as opposed to my other work.” She decided to major in accountancy after learning more about the benefits of an accountancy career. This summer, she’ll be interning in audit at PwC in Cleveland, and we’ll see her back in the fall in the MAcc program.

Ally shares how she chose Miami, what she loves about being a Miamian, and those who’ve impacted her academic career so far.
Making it Miami: I had been taking college tours with my dad for several years before I decided, and Miami was on a route we were driving for a trip. We stopped, and the campus really blew me away. It had the smaller-campus feel that I really loved but with many of the benefits of larger schools. Farmer is a great business school with a great reputation which also was great. As an out-of-state student (from Hudsonville, Michigan), I loved the idea of being in a little college town that functions like its own world. There is also always that influence of scholarships and financial aid which helped the decision.
The Miami Experience: I love going to all of the Miami sporting events. It is fun just to hang out with friends at the games and support the Miami teams. If you need me and there is a sporting event going on, it is almost a guarantee that I will be there. I also enjoy going to different events to support the student orgs that my friends are a part of. Events like the Miami University Fashion & Design’s annual fashion show, or different Miami Activities and Programming (MAP) events to support the people I know in those groups and see all the amazing things on campus that our students do.

Most Impactful: One of the biggest impacts on my academic career has been the faculty. I have been lucky enough to learn from and work with some incredible faculty here who have supported me in every new thing I have done. Dr. Justin McGlothin was my BUS 101 professor during the FYIC and I have worked with him on the FYIC social media ever since [learn more on this podcast episode]. He has been so supportive of every step I have taken academically and professionally. I first met with Dr. Anne Farrell last spring and we discussed goals, social media, and many other things and she has been there as a resource and support ever since. The faculty here truly care about their students and want to do what they can to help you succeed.
