On April 22, Professor Yibo (James) Zhang’s accountancy capstone course (ACC 495/595, Accounting Analysis) invited guest speakers from BDO to talk about cybersecurity, IT audit, and data analytics. Teri Schaffer ‘93, Principal of Northeast Ohio Assurance at BDO, led the team and presented the history of cybersecurity milestone events (e.g., the Y2K) and the importance of understanding cyber risks using stories from her clients as examples for case studies.

She also brought two recent Miami graduates with her to join the presentation, Zack Strom ‘23 and Aidan Schwind ‘23. Aidan followed Teri’s presentation and discussed the role of IT auditing and the ETL process for data preparation (extract, transform, and load). Zack then presented how BDO uses client data and creates dashboards to analyze significant year-to-year changes in the balance sheet.

Students really enjoyed the guest lecture, and the speakers were each awarded a “Professor for a Day” certificate as a token of appreciation.
