2024 Spring Newsletter

Dear Miami Accountancy Alumni and Friends,

It’s hard to believe that the end of another academic year is here. It’s such a bittersweet time. While we celebrate all our students achieved in our classes and our graduates’ accomplishments since they’ve been at Miami, we’re also going to miss them when they leave. The small upside is that for a few short months, there are no waits at Oxford’s best spots.

Accountancy faculty and staff will be busy this summer hosting our Make it Miami Accounting Camp for high school students, developing new experiential learning activities for our courses, and using concentrated blocks of time to advance our research. We’ll also enjoy some vacation time with family and friends. I’m also happy to share that effective July 1, the ‘Interim’ will drop from my title.

In the meantime, I hope you enjoy these stories about the successes of some of our alums, their generosity with the time they spend with students, and our faculty, staff, and students’ accomplishments.

Lastly, a reminder about the For Love. For Honor. For Those Who Will capital campaign: The Farmer Family Foundation has increased its matching gift offer to match dollar-for-dollar all cash received between July 1, 2023, and June 20, 2025, up to $20 million. The match goes to the same account as your contributions, and also applies to organizations’ matching gift programs—so $100 can quickly become $400. My understanding is that there is not much of the $20 million match left, so give today, if you’re able.

Wishing you the summer of your dreams!

Love and Honor,

Tax Accounting in the News

With the recent tax deadline, news outlets have approached our faculty for their expertise in tax matters. Professor Michele Frank provided some insights for the following articles:

“What happens if I don’t file my taxes?” in USA TODAY

“Are personal loans taxable?” in US News

Frank also wrote a thoughtful analysis of interesting historical and philosophical views on taxation in The Conversation article titled “Taxes are due even if you object to government policies or doubt the validity of the 16th Amendment’s ratification.”

Frank was recently presented the Richard K. Smucker Teaching Excellence Award for Outstanding Professor. Congratulations, Michele!

We send Beth Killy our best wishes and thank her for 16 years of faithful service to the Accountancy Department. Beth joined the teaching staff in 2008 and has been a valuable resource for students, many of whom took their first accounting classes with Beth in ACC 221.

We also thank Dale Stoel, who is stepping down as MAcc Director. The impact Dale has had on the program, the students, the faculty, and others in the university is immeasurable. Michele Frank will become MAcc Director on July 1, 2024.
