Middle Schoolers Explore Accounting at Camp Excell

This week, over 100 kids from the Middletown and Cincinnati regions attended Camp Excell, a 4-day and 3-night camp introducing underrepresented youth in the 6th to 9th grades to various disciplines at Miami’s campus, including the arts and humanities, science, technology, engineering, education, and of course, accountancy. On June 27 and 28, accountancy professors held two one-hour sessions, attended by about 20 students each, to introduce what accounting is and why it’s a great career choice.

Professor Michele Frank developed fun and engaging activities for the students. In an investment game, campers role-played and made investing decisionsand were awarded prizes when they made made good decisions. A trivia quiz about accounting provided the campers with information about the wide variety of career opportunities in accounting. Professors Annie Farrell and Drew Reffett were also there to talk to campers and facilitate the games.

Thanks so much for the kind words about the event – it was lots of fun! I’m glad to learn there may be interest in summer workshops for middle- and high-school teachers who teach business curriculums. We’re in the early stages of designing and formalizing programs to do just that. If you are ever interested in talking about what kinds of programs you believe would be valuable, I would love to connect!

Greetings! I was so glad to see your summer program for middle school students! I’m an alum from Miami. Do you ever offer workshops during the summers for teachers who teach business curriculums (accounting/bookkeeping)? It’s always great to learn and share ideas with other teachers and earn our C.E.U’s for our teaching license renewal. I’ve seen teachers’ workshops in other areas such as the science department at Miami. Could the business accounting department ever do this? Thanks!
