Response of Gut structure to stress
Kathryn is currently studying the affects a stressor has on gut permeability. She is using a dye permeability assay to assess the leakiness. She also has looked at the structure of the gut wall using H&E paraffin sections and hopes to look at the ultrastructural junctional proteins that compose the gut barrier using transmission electron microscopy.
Summer Lab Outing
We had fun going uptown to the local Indian restaurant, Krishna after a summer of hard and productive work in the lab. Two undergrads, Ross and Cassandra joined us as they worked in the lab through the summer scholars program provided by Miami.
Spring 2016 End of Semester Lab Party
We had a great time celebrating our work this past semester. Here’s our wonderful team. Dr. Killian brought the famous pinwheels and we made cakes for our senior undergraduates and played a fun game of jeopardy.

Undergraduates, Allie, Daniella, and Anna, all participated in brain awareness week by presenting their work at the poster session. They presented their work from the previous year “Cold shock has long term consequences on the agonistic behavior of male Acheta domesticus crickets”.
