{"id":287,"date":"2016-12-06T18:49:28","date_gmt":"2016-12-06T23:49:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.miamioh.edu\/creativewriting\/?p=287"},"modified":"2022-11-23T10:37:28","modified_gmt":"2022-11-23T15:37:28","slug":"tbt-two-poets-and-a-bassist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.miamioh.edu\/creativewriting\/2016\/12\/tbt-two-poets-and-a-bassist\/","title":{"rendered":"Two Poets and a Bassist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On Nov. 15, the Creative Writing Program at Miami University hosted <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Two Poets and A Bassist, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">featuring Janice Lowe, Yohann Potico, and Tyehimba Jess.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This performance follows the previous day&#8217;s panel, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Collaborating Across the Arts: A Discussion<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Professor Keith Tuma kicked off the event recalling his time with Lowe\u2019s<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Leaving CLE: Poems of Nomadic Dispersal, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">which was published this year by the Miami University Press.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lowe, a composer who has worked on multiple musicals, performed these poems from behind her keyboard while Potico set up to the right with his accompanying bass.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u201cI neglect the sight reading. Everything is timed and cued, so when she says that word, I hit that note,\u201d replied Potico when asked about performing with Lowe. \u201cAccuracy is the challenge.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With a focus on the migration and reverse migration of her family before her birth, Lowe preluded many of the pieces with the anecdotes that brought her relatives to the space each poem was concerned with. Her readings were punctuated with a repetition and questions developing a powerful interior voice whose tone was further amplified by the melodies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI hear in musical phrases,\u201d she said, explaining how she developed her poetry into song. \u201cI hear it in myself, where the meanings change with volumes and with tempo.\u201d<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-295 size-medium alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.miamioh.edu\/creativewriting\/files\/2016\/12\/2pab2-1-200x300.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.miamioh.edu\/creativewriting\/files\/2016\/12\/2pab2-1-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/sites.miamioh.edu\/creativewriting\/files\/2016\/12\/2pab2-1-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.miamioh.edu\/creativewriting\/files\/2016\/12\/2pab2-1-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/sites.miamioh.edu\/creativewriting\/files\/2016\/12\/2pab2-1-624x936.jpg 624w, https:\/\/sites.miamioh.edu\/creativewriting\/files\/2016\/12\/2pab2-1.jpg 1067w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The second half of the two-hour event was opened by the Director of the Creative Writing program, Cathy Wagner, who called Jess\u2019 poems, \u201cbrilliant instances of resistance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cOkay, so I have to follow music, and that is always a hard task,\u201d said Jess, an associate professor at the College of Staten Island. Reading from his new book <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Olio, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jess addressed the audience before each poem to present the stories and styles that informed each piece. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jess explained the importance of opening up to the audience after the performance saying, \u201cThe objective is to introduce these folks [the historical figures in the poems] to audiences in a new, engaging ways. To talk to the audience. To engage with the people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Throughout the evening, both poets addressed how art can serve as the opening for important discussion about recent events in the country. Jess concluded the night with a poem whose goal was to memorialize Black churches that have been burned and the shooting last year at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI think this reading was an important and timely event; the poets\u2019 focus on social issues in their work reinforced the power that art can have to capture attention, to evoke emotion, to delve into the nuances of social institutions and events, and to fight for change\u201d, said Kinsey Cantrell, a senior Creative Writing and Literature double major. \u201cI walked away from the reading with an expanded tool set from the unique forms the poets used and a renewed determination to use my art critically and responsibly.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Tim Thomas<br \/>\nEnglish Department Ambassador<br \/>\nCreative Writing &amp; Literature &#8217;17<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Nov. 15, the Creative Writing Program at Miami University hosted Two Poets and A Bassist, featuring Janice Lowe, Yohann Potico, and Tyehimba Jess.
