Born to a Creole family on a Louisiana plantation some 20<br>\nyears after the Civil War ended, Hunter\u2019s paintings often<br>\nincluded images inspired by Christianity and offer a glimpse<br>\ninto the creative minds and lives of people often<br>\nunderrepresented in art history. This oil on board painting is<br>\nsmall and depicts a baptism ceremony being performed on a<br>\nsunny day outside a country church in a composition divided<br>\ninto two registers.
