In this piece, Faith Ringgold<br>\ntransforms the American flag\u2019s red bars into multicolored<br>\nabstract patterns. These relate to her quilting knowledge and<br>\nthe fabric dying processes of thangka paintings, a Tibetan<br>\nBuddhist religious artform. Ringgold used quilting and<br>\nthangka techniques throughout her career to combat \u201chigh\u201d<br>\npainting and sculpture, artforms that previously excluded<br>\nwomen and did not represent African-American women.
