Ode to Chief Seattle, is<br>\none of a ten-piece series commissioned by the Washington State<br>\nArt Commission that explores the relationship between humans<br>\nand the natural world. The title references Chief Sealth, a Squamish<br>\nand Duwamish chief from whom the city of Seattle is named. Chief<br>\nSealth was a tireless advocate for Native American rights and<br>\nenvironmental protection. Smith\u2019s natural and artificial imagery,<br>\nand antagonistic geometric and organic forms, highlights the<br>\nanthropogenic (human pollution) destruction of the environment<br>\nand a call for rectification.
