In Untitled #117, Cindy Sherman satirizes and challenges
\nstandards and stereotypes of the fashion industry. As a part of
\nher larger collection, Untitled Fashion Series, Sherman creates
\nimages that are frightening and toy with what it means to be
\naccepted as beautiful by society. This piece redefines the term
\n\u201cwoman artist\u201d as Sherman places herself within the
\nphotograph but disguises her identity through costume and
\nmakeup. By leaving the work untitled, Sherman\u2019s true identity
\nbecomes lost in that of a nameless woman. Her identity as
\nboth a woman and an artist merge into one. This creates a
\nclash between identities and a tension between whether
\nSherman is to be viewed as a woman or as an artist.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
