Van Scott was an activist<br>\nduring the Civil Rights movement who fought to preserve<br>\nBlack history. Being the granddaughter of a slave and rejected<br>\nfrom Carnegie Institute of Technology due to her race,<br>\nElizabeth Catlett was heavily exposed to racial injustices. Art<br>\nwas her way of protesting oppression based on race and<br>\ngender. This bust of Van Scott, a woman artist herself,<br>\nhighlights the perseverance of African-American women<br>\nthrough a strong jaw line and bold, engaging eyes.
