Disillusioned with the exclusion of women<br>\nduring the Abstract Expressionist movement, she frequently<br>\nworked in Paris beginning in the 1950s. She continued working<br>\nin the Abstract Expressionist style where she gave attention to<br>\nthe gestural approach of mark making, as seen in this work.<br>\nMitchell\u2019s paintings reflect her internal emotional state and her<br>\nrelationship with and response to nature. She chose a<br>\ncombination of red, black, and yellow in homage to the titular<br>\nsunflowers, a common theme in her work.
