Rain Garden Zag IX is a carefully-considered<br>\narrangement of boxes filled with rich shapes and repeating<br>\npatterns. The piece was purposefully constructed to play<br>\nwith light and shadow, an effect made even more dramatic<br>\nwith its black matte finish. Nevelson\u2019s work inspired a<br>\nchange in discourse that foregrounded women\u2019s life<br>\nexperiences as suitable subject matter. While Nevelson\u2019s<br>\nsculpture may relate to one of her recurring themes of<br>\nmarriage, death, and royalty, the true spirit of Rain Garden<br>\nZag IX remains a mystery, much like many of her famously<br>\nlarge, monochrome \u201cwalls.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>Louise Nevelson (American, b.
