Lewis considers himself an artistrator, a mix of illustrating and fine art and has illustrated over 70 books for children. He has won numerous awards including the\u00a0New York Times 2016 Best Illustrated Book Award for <em>Preaching to the Chickens\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Caldecott Honor Award for <em>Jacqueline Woodson\u2019s Coming on Home Soon.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Six of Lewis&#8217;s works are featured in the exhibition,\u00a0<em>Telling A People&#8217;s Story<\/em> including: <em>Preaching to the Chickens: The Story of Young John Lewis, Talkin&#8217; about Bessie,\u00a0I Love My Hair,\u00a0All Different Now: Juneteenth, the First Day of Freedom,\u00a0Circle Unbroken <\/em>and<em> The Negro Speaks of Rivers.<a href=\"http:\/\/sites.miamioh.edu\/art-museum\/files\/2018\/02\/IMG-2932-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1139 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.miamioh.edu\/art-museum\/files\/2018\/02\/IMG-2932-1-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.miamioh.edu\/art-museum\/files\/2018\/02\/IMG-2932-1-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/sites.miamioh.edu\/art-museum\/files\/2018\/02\/IMG-2932-1-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Lewis recalls being inspired by his two uncles, whom were artists, and he himself being an artist since the third grade. He attended Temple University&#8217;s Tyler School of Art, where he discovered his love for watercolor painting. During his time in college he majored in Graphic Design, Illustration, and Art Education.<\/p>\n<p>Lewis taught in public schools for 12 years before moving on to work at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.
