Outside the Box Featured Artist: Mengyu Yu

By Olivia Semsel, Arts Management Intern

Our fifth Student Response Exhibition, Outside the Box, is open, and you can come check out the unique creations of 34 students (and vote for your favorite)!

This is our next post in a series featuring the student artists who have created one or more pieces displayed in Outside the Box.

Meet our featured artist, Mengyu Yu!

Mengyu is a Senior Stats. & Predictive Analysis Major, with minors in 2D-Media Studies, Computer Science, and Math, from Kaifeng, China!

She came to Miami for the atmosphere and beautiful campus. At Miami, Mengyu is a part of the International Student Organization. She enjoys painting, reading, and playing tennis. Her favorite genre of art is Realism Painting, and her dream job is to work as a data scientist.

The Student Response Exhibition asked students to think beyond physical limits with the concept of a box. For Mengyu’s piece, titled Homes, she states,

“This piece is composed of two images I took: one is the place I am living now in Oxford, while the other one is a famous scene from the city of Kaifeng, which is my home city. I put the picture of Kaifeng inside a box in the middle of the other picture to show how my journey from one country to another is my own out-of-the-box process. The experience in this process is priceless, which is why I documented the two cities in this order.”

Come see the exhibition and vote for your top three favorites! Voting will continue until April 6 and the exhibition celebration and awards ceremony will be held on April 9, from 7-9 p.m.
