This is our next post in a series featuring the student artists who have created one or more pieces displayed in Outside the Box.
Meet our featured artist, Josie Masset!
Josie is a Junior Studio Art and IMS Co-Major, with a minor in Japanese, from Cincinnati, OH!
She came to Miami for the medium size of the university, the generous departmental scholarships, the small and friendly art department, and the variety of classes. At Miami, Josie is a member of the Japanese Culture and Language Club, MU Fencing, and the Visual Arts Club. She enjoys drawing, painting, cooking, and fencing; and her favorite genres of art are animation, illustrations, and comic art. Her dream job is to be a director or key frame animator for movies!
The Student Response Exhibition asked students to think beyond physical limits with the concept of a box. For Josie’s illustration, titled We Shouldn’t Be Shadows, she states,
“Exploring the box as representative of personal possession and, more specifically, of having a home, this piece illustrates the value of humans over their possessions. Covered in personal stories of people I have met in Cincinnati who experience homelessness, the human figure is a ghostly but large shadow behind the home, exemplifying how we may see possession first but that humanity is far greater.”
